"The Southwest: Zion and Canyon De Chelly"

#110H

APTEX
The American Southwest is a geological time machine. Its bizarre and beautiful rock formations are the result of eons of erosion. In Utah's Zion National Park, Art explores surreal slot canyons carved from wind and water and encounters the strange rock spires-hoodoos-that punctuate the landscape like giant exclamation points. In Arizona's Canyon de Chelly, he goes by horseback with a Navajo guide to discover petroglyphs hidden in tribal lands. With its brilliant light, red desert rock, cobalt blue skies, golden cotton woods and white-barked Aspens, the American Southwest is a photographer's playground. (Pt. 10 of 13).

Mario Lanza Singing to the Gods
01:28
PFP
This special chronicles the remarkable life and times of one of the twentieth century's most beloved singing stars, Mario Lanza. The program contains a selection of rare photographs, interviews and footage from movies that made him famous throughout the world. Blessed with one of the great tenor voices of all time, Mario Lanza rose to spectacular heights in a singing career that spanned little more than a decade. Groomed from the outset for a career on the opera stage, Lanza instead flourished in Hollywood where his films, most notably, "The Great Caruso," broke box office records. Split between the desire to establish himself as a serious opera singer and the temptations of Hollywood, Lanza was tormented by self-doubt and resorted to alcohol and over-eating. Mario Lanza Singing to the Gods celebrates Lanza's incomparable talents as well as the torments that led to his untimely death at age 38.

Bob Dylan: Live In Newport 1963-1965
01:28
PFP
This program includes unreleased Bob Dylan performances filmed by Academy Award-winning director Murray Lerner at the Newport Folk Festival, 1963-1965, capturing full performances of some of Dylan's greatest songs, including "Mr. Tambourine Man," "Blowin' In the Wind," "It Ain't Me, Babe," "Like a Rolling Stone." His 1963 and 1964 performances made him popular with the Newport crowd, but in 1965, he decided to "plug in," resulting in a mixed response of cheers and boos. Dylan left the stage after only three songs. Though he re-emerged and sang two acoustic numbers, this shift marked his changing artistic direction as he moved from leading contemporary songwriter of the folk scene to rock 'n' roll star.
