Six wildlife refuges are visited: Wichita Mountains in Oklahoma, where bison roam the land; Pelican Island in Florida--the first established refuge in the country; White River in Arkansas, to learn how hunters helped save migrating waterfowl; Sabine in Louisiana, an essential haven for migrating birds along two major flyways; Bosque Del Apache in New Mexico, where tens of thousands of birds gather each autumn and stay through the winter; and, finally, the shorelines of the Oregon coast, where seabirds, seals, and sea lions are now protected. The program provides both a historical overview of the refuge system (545 in the U.S.), as well as music from renowned artist Paul Winter and poetry from Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Mary Oliver. Mountain Mail Bag: While browsing through a Montana antique store, a California resident discovered an unusual leather satchel. According to legend, John Thompson, a Norwegian immigrant, risked life and limb to hand-deliver the post across the high Sierra Mountains in the years before the Civil War. Could this bag be Thompson's? Banned Birth Control Box: A Missouri resident recently inherited a number of items, including an unusual wooden box. Renee Fleming honors the Metropolitan Opera's 30th anniversary on PBS with a presentation of fans' top ten favorite televised Met moments chosen through online voting. Viewers voted on the GREAT PERFORMANCES website, where 30 excerpts from three decades of Met telecasts were available for screening. They chose their top 10 favorites and ranked their choices from 1 to 10. The contest ran from September 17 to October 12, 2007. So who won the coveted number 1 position?
