Sweetwater Rescue: The Willie and Martin Handcart Story
00:56
PBS
In the mid-1850s, thousands of Latter-Day Saint emigrants crowded the docks of Liverpool, dreaming of a new life in the Salt Lake Valley. After an arduous ocean voyage, and an overland trip to Iowa, they loaded their belongings into handcarts. They then began pulling the nearly 1,300 miles to the Salt Lake Valley, but for the Willie and Martin companies, numerous delays in an already late start led to a near-catastrophe. The emigrants found themselves running out of provisions and stranded in treacherous snowstorms on the high plains of Wyoming. This is the story of those who were stranded, and those who came to their rescue in one of the greatest acts of heroism of the 19th century.
