Seven Sisters: A Robert Kuster Creation In Glass
00:26
(Rpt)
WMVS
The 2004 creation and installation of one of the largest collections of hand-blown glass in North America, located at the headquarters of Sheboygan, Wisconsin-based Acuity Insurance Company, is followed. Glass master Robert Kuster brought this monumental, specially commissioned sculpture to a $46 million building expansion. Art marries architecture, in Kuster's spectacular union, as he creates and assembles the contemporary 13-ton constellation, consisting of more than 12,000 individual pieces. Inspired by nature, and brought to life through the visions of the owner and the artist, the installation is integrated into the architecture's design. The seven huge chandelier sphere sculptures of overwhelming size and beauty--the Seven Sisters--seemingly float in mid-air, at varying heights, coming to rest under the 85-foot-high cathedral ceilings. The creation includes three sculptures in vivid shades of red, 15 feet in diameter. Another four hanging sculptures are in shades of blue, and are 13 feet across.

Forget the pie charts, color-coded maps and hyperventilating pundits. In this triumph of documentary, 12 stories are combined into one. Recorded simultaneously on November 2, 2004, factory workers, ex-felons, harried moms, Native-American activists and diligent poll watchers, from South Dakota to Florida, take the process of democracy into their own hands. The result: an entertaining, inspiring and sometimes unsettling tapestry of citizens determined on one fateful day to make their votes count.

Montezuma Castle, a five-story 20-room cliff dwelling, served as a "high-rise apartment building" for prehistoric Sinagua Indians, over 600 years ago. Now, it serves the same purpose to a colony of bats. Concern over the possible harm that these latter-day residents may be doing has led to some very interesting hands-on research, to study the impact of bat habitats on cultural landmarks. The program also visits Tonto National Monument, where the scale of the ruins makes capturing bats a test of wills and ingenuity, and Chiricahua National Monument, to see how one of Arizona's natural gems is the perfect location for collecting data on tree-roosting bats. This episode finds bats in hand, in roosts, and in the air, to learn how bat population density affects humans.

Budapest, once Vienna's partner in ruling the Austro-Hungarian empire, feels like the capital of Eastern Europe. It's actually two cities--busy Pest and noble Buda--straddling the Danube, and laced together by mighty bridges. Capitalism has taken hold, with gusto, as shopping boulevards thrive, and stone Lenins and cast iron Stalins litter a theme park at the edge of town. Today, Gypsy orchestras feature smoking violins, venerable mineral baths are the rage, and 19th century coffeehouses enjoy a renaissance.

A contributor in Aiken, South Carolina, owns a remarkable collection of wartime home front memorabilia, including a pair of mysterious $5 certificates titled "Brethren Service Committee." History Detectives heads to Pennsylvania and Maryland to gain a deeper understanding of religious and moral objection to military service, and how the certificates were intended as an "alternate service to war". A South Carolina man has a beautiful eight-volume set of Edward Gibbon's History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire that he acquired at a local library sale in Edgefield, South Carolina. The team heads to South Carolina to determine whether the books in question shaped the thinking of a politician who was nicknamed the "cast-iron man" for his staunch determination to defend the causes in which he believed. And, History Detectives traces the ancestry of America's most famous mouse and sheds light on some of the earliest bare-knuckle business fights in the toy industry.

With each passing hour in the U.S., 365 acres of wilderness, countryside, farmland, and native habitat disappear under the foundations of new houses, creating a new group of people using cars that pollute, lawns that suck water, and air that requires conditioning. The building of shelter consumes one-sixth of the world's fresh water supply, one-fourth of its wood harvest, two-fifths of its fossil fuels and manufactured materials, and one-half its waste stream. The first episode looks at sustainable architecture begins in New York, a city that is greening its industrial skyline with ground-breaking projects. Some of Manhattan's most prominent and technologically advanced structures are explored, like One Bryant Park and The Solaire, as well as the innovative minds behind them; illustrating how the ubiquitous skyscraper can be a model of environmental responsibility. Brad Pitt narrates this 6-part season exploring the social, political, cultural, environmental, and economic issues of sustainable architecture.
