In Grand Ronde, OR, sits what appears to be an early 20th century Dutch Colonial Style home. But research revealed that, at the core of the house, is a U.S. Army officer's quarters--once built at nearby Fort Yamhill, on the border of a Native American reservation. The construction of the buildings was supervised by an officer who became one of the Union Army's greatest generals. Could this have been the home of General Philip Sheridan? Oregon's Jack Ainsworth Mills has a watch that may have been a gift to his grandfather from American author Samuel Clemens, known as Mark Twain. Mills has wondered how his grandfather, Captain Ainsworth, could have met Clemens. And a Revolutionary War poem is found in an antique trunk in Salem, OR; it appears to be from American Dan Goodhue, while imprisoned in 1780 as a POW in England. How did the letter travel there? A NOVA team discovers the wreck, and retells the Yamato's extraordinary saga through the eyes of the few Japanese crew who survived the sinking, and are still living today. State-of-the-art CGI animation shows what the colossal battleship was like, in all its glory, at the time of its launching. The program opens a dramatic perspective on the great age of battleships, and why it ended so abruptly with the Yamato's disastrous sinking. [TVG]
