Legends of Jazz With Ramsey Lewis
"The Tenors"

Almost more than any other instrument, the tenor seems to be able to encompass all the infinite shades of jazz. Veteran sax man Benny Golson (who has performed with Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, and Art Blakey); and Chris Potter, the fiery young horn player who has performed with everyone from the Mingus Big Band to Steely Dan; as well as rising young star Marcus Strickland, play individually and together, and talk about their lives in music--and influences such as Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Sonny Rollins, Coltrane, and Stan Getz. The legendary Benny Golson's tenor saxophone performance demonstrates that he is quite at home playing with the young lions. Chris Potter, the ever-dependable innovator, and the surprisingly fresh Marcus Strickland gave performances to remind all that jazz continues to be in good hands.

The Grannies travel to Istanbul, the confluence of the great Christian, Moslem, and Byzantine cultures. Framed by its seas--the Marmara, Black Sea, Mediterranean, and the mysterious Bosporus, Istanbul is considered home of one of the wonders of the world--Hagia Sofia. Straddling both Asia and Europe, the country is a repository of ancient and modern art, ruins, and culture. Places like the Blue Mosque take the breath away. The Grannies view ancient Roman underground cistern ruins, travel back in time to the treasures of Topkapi Palace, and have a private view of its rare artifacts. On the tour, Pat Johnson and Regina Fraser meet with three famous Turkish artists, and Bedri Baykam, internationally known visual artist, filmmaker, and writer.

Out of the Ashes: Recovering The Lost Library of Herculaneum
00:56
(Rpt)
APT
When the eruption of Mount Vesuvius swallowed up the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in A.D. 79, it not only froze an ancient civilization, it also preserved the only surviving library from antiquity. This documentary follows attempts over 250 years to unroll and decipher carbonized papyrus rolls found in the Villa of the Papyri at Herculaneum; and traces the history of the Herculaneum papyri from the time of the eruption in the first century, to their discovery in 1752, to modern developments that impact their study. In the 21st century, scholars continue to debate the future of the original Villa of the Papyri at Herculaneum, where the scrolls were all found. The site was never fully excavated, and recent discoveries have led many scholars to believe that other scrolls--and perhaps another entire library--may still be buried there.

Event planning at the castle requires a team of more than 300 people to ensure everything runs smoothly. Queen Elizabeth's housekeeper, her grooms, fender smiths and flag men, picture restorers, military knights, and priests all play a critical role in preparing for events, including state visits. Six months of planning have gone into preparations for the arrival of France's President and Madame Chirac, to mark the centenary of Entente Cordiale. In addition to an official state dinner, guests are expected to be treated to an abridged version of Les Miserables, performed in the Waterloo Chamber (renamed the Music Room for the night). As protestors gather outside the castle and disrupt traffic, delays could upset all of the hard work and planning. First of 3 programs.

Doc Holliday's Watch: A Oklahoma pawn store clerk's customer had a pawned antique watch, engraved with a potentially historic inscription. Could this watch have been a gift from the fearless lawman, Wyatt Earp, to the dentist, gambler, and gunman "Doc" Holliday, perhaps in gratitude for his help fighting the Clanton gang at the OK Corral? Civil War Female Soldiers: A Louisiana resident owns a Civil War photograph featuring a fine-boned, slight-figured soldier. The soldier is identified as a member of the 2nd Louisiana Infantry... but could it be a woman in disguise? This may be the only known photo of a Confederate woman soldier. Japanese Internment Camp Artwork: In a San Francisco archive, an intern discovered a set of 10 postcard-size watercolors of what appears to be a prison camp. Piecing them together, it looks as if they were painted on the back of a Japanese-American internment notice from 1942. What is the story?

The Opatas were probably the largest aboriginal group in what is now Sonora, Mexico; but, by the 1950s, anthropologists could not locate a single speaker of the native language. While the people may be extinct, the Opatas left behind numerous traditions. In Buena Vista, Sonora, this program searches for the descendants of Opata palm weavers; and explores the tradition of native palm weaving that has survived through the centuries. The women still weave in "hookies"--small underground cellars that provide the cool and humid climate needed to maintain the elasticity of the palms for weaving.
