An Oklahoma pawn store clerk's customer had a pawned antique watch, engraved with a potentially historic inscription. Could this watch have been a gift from the fearless lawman, Wyatt Earp, to the dentist, gambler, and gunman "Doc" Holliday, perhaps in gratitude for his help fighting the Clanton gang at the OK Corral? In Louisiana, a resident owns a Civil War photograph featuring a fine-boned, slight-figured soldier. The soldier is identified as a member of the 2nd Louisiana Infantry--but could it be a woman in disguise? In a San Francisco archive, an intern discovered a set of 10 postcard-size watercolors of what appears to be a prison camp. The story of the development of the ambulance is intertwined with warfare, where there has always been a pressing need to quickly move the wounded from the battlefield. Civilians now benefit from the development of the rolling mini-hospitals that ambulances became, in combat. Seminal figures in the ambulance's story are met, including Florence Nightingale and her angels of mercy; Clara Barton, the founder of the American Red Cross; and Ernest Hemingway, who was a brave volunteer ambulance driver during World War One, just before he became a famous author. Today's rapid response medicine integrates the use of helicopters and highly trained ground crews--an offshoot of the struggles of Korea and Vietnam. [TVG]
