As Bittman treks the world, he notes the commonality of wine country: it requires the right land, climate and people, and always attracts great food. In the vineyards of Tuscany's Brunello wine country, Bittman receives a one-on-one lesson on wine appreciation from chef Mario Batali. In the Penedes region of Spain, Bittman feasts on local Catalan dishes and wine that have become increasingly popular in the United States. Finally, he journeys closer to home, in Sonoma and Napa Valleys, to re-discover classic California cooking, including Gary Danko's lobster with a white wine butter sauce.

The stereotypical images of Mexico's Baja California include sun-drenched beaches, bizarre spiny plants, and remote dusty pueblos. But Baja is full of surprises. Known for its tequila and cerveza, the country's burgeoning wine industry may, someday, give these traditional beverages stiff competition, as it starts to draw international recognition. Host David Yetman is joined by Bill Beezley, acting head of The University of Arizona Latin American Studies department and historian, for a tour of the region's vineyards. They search for the origins of this growing interest in wine-making, from the very large growers and producers, to wine co-ops, where anyone can join in the fun.

Lee Ritenour, Marcus Miller, and George Duke have played together in the past, but in this episode they perform with energy and creativity, as though they had been playing together for years. Master guitarist and contemporary jazz legend Lee Ritenour, keyboardist George Duke, and the phenomenal bassist/producer Marcus Miller perform together and share the musical progressions that led to the creation of the various sub-genres called "contemporary jazz." The trail ranges from the soul/R&B/funk inflected jazz beginning in the late 1950s, into the '60s, with artists such as Horace Silver, Herbie Hancock, and Ramsey Lewis; the creation of Rock Fusion in the late 60s and into the 1970s, by artists like Miles Davis, Weather Report, and Chick Corea; the melding of pop and jazz in the 1980s, with artists such as Spyro Gyra, the Yellowjackets, and Lee himself, and on into the Smooth Jazz era that characterizes much of contemporary jazz.

Andrew Jackson: Good, Evil and the Presidency

America's controversial seventh president fought in the Revolutionary War when he was 13 years old. At the same age, he used the skills learned in battle to kill a man over a gambling debt. Eventually, Jackson led the American army to the most surprising victory in its history in the Battle of New Orleans, but he also launched an unauthorized invasion of Florida. He founded the Democratic Party, yet was viewed by his enemies as an American Napoleon. Narrated by Emmy Award-winning actor Martin Sheen, Jackson's story is told, with startling relevance to the modern presidency by bringing to life one of the most remarkable, yet divisive presidents in our history.

#1806
PBS
In the late 1950s, a shy Chicago accountant who was trying to pick up some extra cash began doing radio sketches. By 1960, The Button-Down Mind--recorded before he even stepped onto the stand-up circuit--hit gold as Album of the Year, and won a Grammy for Best New Artist. Bland Bob's deadpan and mildly nervous humor about the everyday guy, exemplified in "The Driving Instructor," helped spearhead the explosion in American comedy--at clubs, on records, and TV variety shows--and by pushing the boundaries of the sitcom genre. "The Bob Newhart Show" and, later, "Newhart," portraying the sane man caught in a world of zany characters gone mad, were among the most popular viewing staples throughout the 70s and 80s. Since then, Newhart has continued performing stand-up dates, and was recognized with a 2004 Emmy nomination for his first dramatic role on "ER." His legacy has influenced Jerry Seinfeld, Ellen DeGeneres, Richard Pryor, and more.
