The Opatas were probably the largest aboriginal group in what is now Sonora, Mexico; but, by the 1950s, anthropologists could not locate a single speaker of the native language. While the people may be extinct, the Opatas left behind numerous traditions. In Buena Vista, Sonora, this program searches for the descendants of Opata palm weavers; and explores the tradition of native palm weaving that has survived through the centuries. The women still weave in "hookies"--small underground cellars that provide the cool and humid climate needed to maintain the elasticity of the palms for weaving.

Legends of Jazz With Ramsey Lewis
"The American Songbook"

APT
From the 1930s to the 1950s, American songwriters created an unequaled body of work this program calls The American Songbook. Many of these tunes have become "standards," and they are linked forever to the jazz and pop singers who gave them life. Guitarist/vocalist John Pizzarelli and top jazz singer Jane Monheit talk with Ramsey Lewis about what jazz has taken from (and given to) the great American popular song composers, from Irving Berlin, to Gershwin, and beyond. John Pizzarelli and Jane Monheit sing both separately, and in duet, to demonstrate why they are so well-loved--as are the songs they perform--and why this great music continues.

In 1970, a team of researchers at Corning Glass made a discovery that would revolutionize the way people communicate. Their development of a fiber optic cable was one step in an ongoing process of research and experimentation in a number of diverse fields of study. More than 30 years later, fiber optics is a technology that nearly outgrew itself, but one that is an almost omnipresent element of modern communication. Just about every international phone call made relies on fiber optics somewhere along the way, and newly developed high-bandwidth cables have even allowed scientists to recreate the sense of touch via the Internet, and to perform remote tele-surgeries across continents. The brilliance, foresight, challenges, and sheer luck that have led to the proliferation of the worldwide network of fiber optic cables, and the revolution of global communications, are examined.

A San Francisco toy collector believes his small mouse figurine may turn the legend on its ears. With a patent label that says "Pat. Aug. 17, 1926," the figure appears to have been produced 2 years before Disney created Mickey Mouse. Operating one of the world's busiest international airports on a daily basis is like a carefully choreographed ballet. "Pete Seeger: The Power of Song"

#2101P

This first authorized film poetically documents Seeger's unique experience and contributions. The man who introduced America to its own folk heritage, he deeply believes in the power of song and is convinced that individuals can make a difference. He made a whole generation passionate about playing the guitar and picking the banjo, and got them singing together and using music as a force for social change. Largely misunderstood by his critics, including the U.S. government, for his views on peace, civil rights and ecology, Seeger went from the top of the hit parade to the top of the blacklist--banned from commercial television for more than 17 years. His inspiring, but not always easy, story is told by everyone from Bob Dylan to the Dixie Chicks and through a remarkable historical archive--a history that Seeger himself, now almost 90 years old, helped create.
