After their first successful powered flight, the Wright Brothers turned to the U.S. Army, well aware of the potential military value of their airplane. However, as World War I approached, the airplane became an essential tool for aerial reconnaissance and artillery spotting. First episode in a 4-part series. Peru's Colca Canyon is--at 12,000 feet--one of the tallest and deepest canyons in the world, and home of Andean Condors, massive birds with wingspans more than 11 feet wide. The natural history of these graceful creatures is explored, to learn their ritualistic significance to the native people of the area. Through the canyon, the terraced farming that is a result of pre-Incan engineering sophistication is examined. The native people still live pretty much the same way as they did before the arrival of the Incans. The fruit of the huge sancayo cactus is harvested, and a traditional lunch with a group of workers taking a break from their potato harvesting is enjoyed. The plowshare and oxen are still used in the harvesting process. Finally, a colorful field of ripening quinoa is admired, and a pair of women winnow the essential Andean crop. [TVG] R of 12/7 5pm

Give your brain a workout, and get it in better shape. This program is based on neuro-plasticity, the ability of the brain to change and adapt--even rewire itself. In the past two years, a team of scientists has developed computer-based stimulus sets that drive beneficial chemical, physical and functional changes in the brain. Dr. Michael Merzenich of the University of California San Francisco and his colleagues around the world have been leading this effort; he brings the research findings, along with a scientifically based set of brain exercises, to PBS viewers in this innovative and life-altering program. America has turned to comfort foods. And what is comfort food? After collecting over one hundred recipes from public TV viewers, preparations fall into a number of categories. First, there are hearth-warming soups and stews that satisfy the appetite and the soul, including slow cooking. Then, there are the foods of childhood, like meatloaf with mushroom gravy and dumplings, or spaghetti and meatballs. Next are the ethnic foods that tie people to their families, but also to a heritage that goes back for generations. Finally, there are recipes of absolute indulgence: a "dump and bake" dessert called Peaches and Cream or a pineapple cheesecake. Chris Fennimore shows Nancy Polinsky one of his favorites, Pasta With Fried Zucchini; while she shares her Easy Toffee Coffee Cake. Other recipes include a spicy turkey and black bean chili, and Pork Chops With Sweet Potato Gravy. [TVG]
