A state highway splits part of the dune field between wilderness and recreational area, but the task of monitoring usage is challenging. In contrast, Mexico's Gran Desierto Dunes are characterized by magnificent isolation. These dunes lie within a biosphere reserve, and are further protected from crowds by a nearly inaccessible road, built essentially from well-placed trash and old tires. This dune system is known for unique formations, created by the constantly shifting winds; and how native plants adapt to unpredictable gusts. Finally, Utah's Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park is visited, to learn what stories can be told by animal tracks in the sand. [TVG]
