"The Ballad of Esequiel Hernandez"
01:26
#2103Z
PBS
In 1997, U.S. Marines patrolling the Texas-Mexico border as part of the War on Drugs shot and killed Esequiel Hernandez Jr. Mistaken for a drug runner, the 18-year-old was, in fact, a U.S. citizen tending his family's goats with a .22 rifle. He became the first American killed by U.S. military forces on native soil since the 1970 Kent State shootings. Narrated by Tommy Lee Jones, the film explores Hernandez's death and its torturous aftermath. His parents and friends, the Marines on patrol and investigators discuss the death of one young man and the dangers of militarizing the border.

The stereotypical images of Mexico's Baja California include sun-drenched beaches, bizarre spiny plants, and remote dusty pueblos. But Baja is full of surprises. Known for its tequila and cerveza, the country's burgeoning wine industry may, someday, give these traditional beverages stiff competition, as it starts to draw international recognition. Host David Yetman is joined by Bill Beezley, acting head of The University of Arizona Latin American Studies department and historian, for a tour of the region's vineyards. They search for the origins of this growing interest in wine-making, from the very large growers and producers, to wine co-ops, where anyone can join in the fun.

Rebel Whiskey Flask: In 1794, thousands protested against the U.S. government, because of a tax on whiskey. A Desert Storm veteran believes a flag in her posession was carried into battle by one of the few African-American infantry regiments that fought in WWI under the command of the French. Host Elyse Luray heads to Columbia, South Carolina, to link this mysterious flag to the legacy of the Red Hand Division and its wartime triumphs. An Illinois man believes his painting is the authentic work of artist and military officer Seth Eastman--depicting Native-American life in the mid-1800s. Host Tukufu Zuberi travels to historic Fort Snelling in Minnesota to examine how Eastman carried out government policies of Native-American removal while capturing on canvas what he believed was a doomed way of life. In the late 1800's, Tongs were places of protection and solidarity during a time of chaos. Gwen Wright heads to the Sacramento Delta and to San Francisco to unravel the mystery of the Chinese Tong.

Central Ireland's waterlogged landscape is no ordinary ground. Here, the moist earth halts decomposition, perfectly preserving stunning evidence of brutal ritualistic killings from the prehistoric Iron Age, over 2,000 years ago. These are not skeletons or mummies, but the soft tissue and remains of people trapped in time. The perpetrators of this ancient violence are well beyond the reach of law, but there are still many fascinating secrets their victims will share, if only modern science knows how to ask. NOVA is granted exclusive access to the investigation of two recently unearthed and exceedingly rare bog bodies. Viewers enter the lab with the experts, as they push archaeological forensics to its limits, aiming to unravel how these people lived--and how and why they died.

Wartime Baseball: A Seattle, WA, man has a baseball, given to him by his father, that is autographed by baseball icon Dizzy Dean. The ball is dated July 12, 1944, and his father claims he played catcher in a wartime ballgame that brought together two legendary pitchers: Dizzy Dean and Negro League star Satchel Paige. Could the autographed ball be evidence of the influence of America's national pastime on racial integration? Confederate Eyeglass: A contributor in Terre Haute, IN, has a tiny brass eyeglass that, when peered through, reveals an image of Confederate president Jefferson Davis. The owner believes miniature "Davis" eyeglass pieces were a wartime adornment of confederate supporters in the North, who used these objects to secretly identify themselves to one another. Howard Hughes' Invention?: On June 1st, 1909, Howard Hughes Sr. drove to Texas to show off a new creation: a twin-cone roller rock bit that would ultimately allow oil people around the world to tap into previously unreachable oil reserves.
