APT
Buffalo, NY, possesses a remarkable variety of architectural masterpieces, from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The city's secular buildings are designed by three great architects: Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Henry Hobson Richardson; and the city's sacred architecture, of the Roman Catholic, Episcopal, Presbyterian, Lutheran, Unitarian Universalist, and Jewish faiths, is equally impressive. This exploration of 12 sacred Buffalo landmark reveals architectural styles in houses of worship ranging from Gothic to Byzantine, Romanesque to Arts and Crafts, and Baroque to Modern; and the tallest openwork spire ever built completely of stone; in addition to the church that housed one of the first men and boys choirs in the U.S.; an ornately decorated church built using medieval methods and tools; and the historic Centennial organ, originally built for the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, PA.

At a time when the U.S. Navy dominated Hawaii, Americans thought of the islands as their Paradise. But, in September of 1931, an incident exposed racial tensions roiling beneath the surface. Thalia Fortescue Massie, the troubled young wife of a navy lieutenant, claimed that a group of Hawaiians had raped her on a lonely beach road. Five young men were arrested--two Hawaiians, two Japanese, and a Chinese. Despite evidence that the defendants couldn't have committed the crime, a mixed-race jury deadlocked, and the suspects were released. One of the defendants was found dead on the backseat of Massie's mother's car. News of Grace Hubbard Fortescue's "honor slaying" unleashed a torrent of racist invective from the mainland, in support of the mother, Fortescue. Though she was eventually convicted of manslaughter, her sentence was commuted to an hour. Thus, a wound was inflicted on the psyche of the Hawaiian people that has yet to heal.

"Portrait of George Washington/Revolutionary War Poem/Revolutionary War Cannon"
00:56
#305Z

PBS
Could a portrait passed down through a Maryland family actually be an authentic portrait of the nation's first president, George Washington, by artist Gilbert Stuart, whose resume includes the dollar bill's Washington portrait? In Salem, OR, the story of a Revolutionary War poem, found 25 years ago, hidden in an antique trunk, is explored. The document appears to have been written by American, Dan Goodhue, while imprisoned in 1780, as a POW in England. Who was this man, and how did his poem travel across the sea and the nation? A Boston woman is fascinated by a cannon, kept in a local national park storage facility. In 1774, members of the Boston Militia may have stolen the cannon from the Boston Armory, and hid it on her ancestor's land. Could the British forces' attempt to retrieve such cannons have precipitated the first Revolutionary War battle?

PFP
This special chronicles the remarkable life and times of one of the twentieth century's most beloved singing stars, Mario Lanza. The program contains a selection of rare photographs, interviews and footage from movies that made him famous throughout the world. Blessed with one of the great tenor voices of all time, Mario Lanza rose to spectacular heights in a singing career that spanned little more than a decade. Groomed from the outset for a career on the opera stage, Lanza instead flourished in Hollywood where his films, most notably, "The Great Caruso," broke box office records. Split between the desire to establish himself as a serious opera singer and the temptations of Hollywood, Lanza was tormented by self-doubt and resorted to alcohol and over-eating. Mario Lanza Singing to the Gods celebrates Lanza's incomparable talents as well as the torments that led to his untimely death at age 38.
