In the early 20th century, nearly 250,000 Chinese immigrants to the U.S. were detained and interrogated on Angel Island, San Francisco's West Coast immigration center. Hundreds of their poems are carved into the center's walls. Little is known of the poem's authors. Chinese American Kathleen Wong believes that her great-grandfather may have died there.
