PBS
Host Niall Ferguson examines the horrors of the Second World War and shows how, in order to win, the allies had to act with the same savagery as their enemies. It was, "a tainted victory"--and the true, ultimate winners were not those who were victorious in 1945. (2 of 3)

Smoke is the soul of true barbecue. As you climb the ladder of barbecue enlightenment, you'll want to be able to smoke a variety of foods in a variety of grills and smokers. Steven grills four diverse foods: ribs, turkey, salmon, and even a dessert-prepared using a traditional offset barrel smoker, a water smoker, a charcoal grill, and a stovetop smoker. The results: Tender Kansas City-style Spareribs, hickory smoked and served with a spicy apple BBQ sauce; Heart-healthy Turkey Pastrami smoked and served on fresh rye bread with sauerkraut and homemade Russian dressing; Sunday morning Smoked Salmon, served with grilled toast points, capers, diced red onions, and sour cream. Everywhere in the Turkish capital is evidence of civilizations that tried to tame it. From the Romans to the Ottomans, this tumultuous city has seen it all, and its architecture, cuisine, and customs reflect that reality. Here, Christianity and Islam have their touchstones, and the cliché that "East meets West" at the Bosporus is a truism. Rudy prowls some of the Grand Bazaar's 2,000 shops and spends some time with a professional shopper who teaches travelers the fine art of haggling. And can those Turkish carpets tell stories? Many do--stories of love and despair are woven in wool and color. Rudy gets steamed and scrubbed in a 16th century hammam, or public bath, and tours some of the world's great buildings--Topkapi Palace, the Aya Sofia, the Blue Mosque, and the downtown Spice Market. PBS
In 1985, one of the greatest treasure discoveries was made off the Florida Keys when the wreck of the Spanish ship Atocha was found. On board were some 40 tons of silver and gold, which in 1622 had been heading from the New World to the Spanish treasury as the means to fund the Thirty Years' War. A man from Cedartown, Georgia, was a diver on that legendary find and received two silver bars as compensation for his efforts. He's long been mystified by a strange mark that appears on one of the bars--but the mark is mysteriously absent from the other bar. In Key West, Florida, host Tukufu Zuberi translates 300-year-old documents from the archives of the Spanish treasury in Seville to crack a unique code of communication among ship captains of that era. And, amid the stacks at the Wesleyan University Library, a student has found a book emblazoned with the name and address of the legendary anarchist Lucy Parsons.

PBS
A woman in Missoula, Montana, bought an old fiddle case in the Montana mining town of Butte in the 1960s. She was told the case actually held a scale that Chinese immigrants in the area had used for weighing opium. Trade in opium was legal in the U.S. until 1909; it was commonly used both as a medicine and as a drug. The Chinese were among the first immigrant groups to arrive in Montana in the 1800s, working on building the railroads, as gold miners and in restaurant and laundry businesses. History Detectives heads to Montana to find out how Chinese immigrants survived for decades in Big Sky Country, particularly during a time when anti-Chinese sentiment was rampant in the U.S. Next, the team ventures to Kentucky and Ohio to determine whether a movie reel could be one of thousands of silent films that have been lost forever to film history. And, the possible link to Hitler's once-feared right-hand-man is investigated.

Rick and his daughter, Lanie, prepare a block party for 25, featuring Oaxacan-style Barbacoa-lamb marinated with red chiles, wrapped in avocado and banana leaves and slow-roasted in the smoldering pit. To welcome the lucky friends and neighbors, there are refreshingly simple Watermelon Coolers and freshly made Tlayudas Oaxaquenas, Oaxacan-style grilled tostadas, topped with chorizo, guacamole and fresh cheese.
