They stop in Winslow, Arizona at the La Posada Inn which has been open since the 1930s. Poems--San Francisco, CA: In the first half of the 20th century, Chinese immigrants tried to enter the U.S. Because of discrimination, and laws meant to impede their passage, most were detained and interrogated on Angel Island, America's west coast immigration center. Performance practices have varnished--and, as some claim, tarnished--the great works of classical music's repertoire. An entire movement of research 19th-century whitewash from great baroque works. Maestro James Conlon, conductor for the Twelfth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, explores the merits and deficiencies of tradition through the eyes of the young pianists who competed in the 2005 event in Fort Worth, TX. He insists that, while performers should avoid cliche, they should also beware of novelty without substance. Solo excerpts are featured by Crystal Award winner Sa Chen and finalist Roberto Plano, who plays the final movement of the Dvorak piano quintet, joined by the Takacs String Quartet. The world-renowned Hammond B3 organ's role in jazz is celebrated, while taking a look back at the legends who helped take the B3 out of the church and auditorium, and into the smoky clubs, roadhouses, and recording studios--where it gained its fame. Joey DeFrancesco (a former B3 prodigy who made his debut recording at the tender age of 18) talks about his relationship with the B3, and with the instrument's most famous proponent, the late great Jimmy Smith. Dr. Lonnie Smith, a giant of the B3 since the 1960s, discusses those legendary days, while both artists talk about the part they have played in the global renaissance the "Killer B" is enjoying. DeFrancesco and Smith perform individually and together in this high-energy episode. There are not many instances where two great organ players come together on the same stage. Fiona's first client is a local guide dog called Fable, who has broken a tooth on a bone, and needs some dental work. It should be a straight-forward operation, although it's the first dental work that Fiona has carried out for 18 months.
