Drivers of shiny new cars talk on their cell phones as they whiz through Bucharest; while, in the countryside, peasants transport their crops on horse-drawn wagons. The Romans, the French, and the Russians have all left their distinctive marks on the people and architecture. Julie & Mark explore Transylvania's medieval villages and splendidly preserved castles, and cycle the forests of the Carpathian Mountains.

The climbers, exhausted from their summit climb, were soon lost in darkness, in a fierce blizzard, far from the safety of High Camp at 26,000 feet. World-renowned climber and filmmaker David Breashears, who aided the rescue efforts back in 1996, now returns to Everest to tell the fuller story of what really happened on that legendary climb. Through remarkably intimate interviews with the climbers and Sherpas--many who have never spoken before on American television--Breashears sheds new light on the worst climbing tragedy in Mount Everest's history.

As darkness fell on May 10, 1996, a fast moving storm of unimaginable ferocity trapped three climbing teams high on the slopes of Mount Everest.

He also shows some of his favorite bits for creating both simple and complex edges on his projects. Then, Norm turns to the task of making perfect mortises for hinges, by creating a jig that allows even a novice to achieve perfect results every time. Next, he uses the router and builds another home-built jig to form precise dadoes in shelf standards--elements he might build for a bookcase project.

A difficult journey that begins in hopelessness and shame for thousands of women in Ethiopia ends in a productive new life in this award-winning documentary produced by Mary Olive Smith. Filmed in a starkly beautiful landscape, the film juxtaposes the isolated lives of village women who are outcasts because of their medical condition, with the faraway hospital that offers a miracle after a long and arduous trek--a "walk to beautiful". The film tells the personal stories of rural women who make their way to Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, seeking treatment for obstetric fistula, a life-shattering complication of childbirth that was once common in the pre-industrial United States but that is now relegated to the poorest regions of the world.

They're called personal computers, but human interactions with them are utterly impersonal, via keyboard and mouse. Host Alan Alda gets to communicate with computers that know who he is, where he is, what he's doing, and even how he's feeling. The ultimate such computer--actually a cute and cuddly robot--is being developed in a unique collaboration between Hollywood and MIT.

Ever since the ubiquitous power tools were invented many years ago, craftsworkers like host Norm Abram have been devising ways to use routers for a wide variety of useful tasks. Norm begins this special two-part program with a demonstration of both the standard base and the plunge-type routers.

What exactly does it take to make wild places work the way they must? How can one manage a South African game park so the rhinos inside behave as if the land is as wild as ever? How can bison help return an Oklahoma cattle ranch to the prairie it once was? This episode includes the first important results to emerge from research being conducted inside Biosphere 2 in Arizona. Now completely reorganized as a climate research institute, with facilities like no other in the world, Biosphere explores the reactions of miniature wild ecosystems like rainforests and coral reefs to the kinds of global atmospheres that may be experienced 50 or 100 years from now.

Johnson & Wales chefs show why salt is no ordinary ingredient as they create some extraordinary recipes with it. First recipe comes from an age-old Mediterranean custom in which salt is cooked in a case of salt, creating exceptionally succulent, moist meat. Then it's a lesson in brining, a technique that infuses tremendous moisture and flavor into meat and seafood. Final class is with acclaimed guest chef Rick Moonen. Salt-Crusted Chicken; Cured Beef Tenderloin A la Carpaccio with Truffle Oil; Shrimp and Tilapia Burger with Chipotle Mayonnaise.
