Pat Metheny has been one of the most unique forces in jazz guitar for more than 20 years. His music--with its blend of jazz, rock, folk, and electronic elements--is highly original and enormously popular, allowing him to sell out arena venues. He appears in this episode with Jim Hall, NEA Jazz Master and a musician of understated elegance, who is considered one of the greatest living jazz guitarists. Although Pat Metheny, the wonderful contemporary guitarist, says that he has always looked up to Jim Hall, this as simply a musical love affair between two great artists.

Jared Diamond's sometimes-controversial theories about the course of human civilization are presented. The first episode of three proposes that a society's potential for advanced development was not determined by race or creed, or by time and experience, but by access to domesticated animals and cultivated plants. Diamond's Pulitzer Prize-winning work offers a revealing look at the rise and fall of societies through the lens of geography, technology, biology, and economics--forces symbolized by the power of guns, germs, and steel. The series spans five continents, and uses historical re-enactments to illustrate Diamond's theories, explaining why societies developed differently in different parts of the world--and why some became conquerors, and others--the conquered. Jared Diamond hosts.

Event planning at the castle requires a team of more than 300 people to ensure everything runs smoothly. Queen Elizabeth's housekeeper, her grooms, fender smiths and flag men, picture restorers, military knights, and priests all play a critical role in preparing for events, including state visits. Six months of planning have gone into preparations for the arrival of France's President and Madame Chirac, to mark the centenary of Entente Cordiale. In addition to an official state dinner, guests are expected to be treated to an abridged version of Les Miserables, performed in the Waterloo Chamber (renamed the Music Room for the night). As protestors gather outside the castle and disrupt traffic, delays could upset all of the hard work and planning. First of 3 programs.
