On October, 19, 1901, the people of Paris turned out by the thousands to watch a dashing, impeccably-dressed Brazilian-born inventor, Alberto Santos-Dumont, conquer the skies. His fragile, gas-powered balloon made an astounding half-hour flight over the city and around the Eiffel Tower. For a brief moment, Santos-Dumont was the toast of Paris and acclaimed around the world. Then, eclipsed by the growing fame of the Wright Brothers, Santos-Dumont began slipping into illness and depression. Featuring re-creations and replicas of Santos-Dumont's pioneering balloons and airplanes, the program reveals the daring flights, and dramatic life of this neglected genius. The legendary Les Paul-father of the solid-body electric guitar, inventor of overdubbing and multi-track recording, king of the 50s pop charts and rock'n'roll pioneer--is still irascible, still egotistical, still indefatigable, still performing and holding court every Monday night at the Iridium Jazz Club in New York City. He is the last of that self-educated, brilliantly innovative generation of media masterminds who revolutionized popular music and reinvented global musical culture--still tinkering and still chasing the perfect sound. History Detectives "Sheridan's House, Mark Twain Watch, Prisoner Poem" 00:56 #109Z (Rpt) PBS
In Grand Ronde, OR, sits what appears to be an early 20th century Dutch Colonial Style home. But research revealed that, at the core of the house, is a U.S. Army officer's quarters--once built at nearby Fort Yamhill, on the border of a Native American reservation. The construction of the buildings was supervised by an officer who became one of the Union Army's greatest generals. Could this have been the home of General Philip Sheridan? Oregon's Jack Ainsworth Mills has a watch that may have been a gift to his grandfather from American author Samuel Clemens, known as Mark Twain. Mills has wondered how his grandfather, Captain Ainsworth, could have met Clemens. And a Revolutionary War poem is found in an antique trunk in Salem, OR; it appears to be from American Dan Goodhue, while imprisoned in 1780 as a POW in England. How did the letter travel there? [TVG] R on 8/18 1pm; 9/21 1pm

2PM

Nature "Kalahari: The Flooded Desert" 00:56 #2103H (Rpt) PBS
Unlike most of the world's major rivers which empty into the sea, the Okavango River in Africa empties into a desert. Remarkably, the waters do not always evaporate in the wetlands of the Okavanga Delta. Extended rainfalls periodically caused the Okavango to overflow, flooding the desert. The program documents this ecosystem so complex that the footsteps of an elephant can alter the flow of streams that feed vegetation, and the root of a palm tree can help create a new island. Second of two programs featuring the Kalahari desert. [TVG] R on 7/17 8am; 7/19 7pm

3PM

Barbecue University with Steven Raichlen "On The Lamb" 00:30 #411Z (Rpt) APT
Lamb, so beloved elsewhere in the world, is underrepresented on American tables: Per capita consumption here is about 1 pound per year. Then it's double-digit thick and double-digit good Lamb Chops and Lamb Steaks served with a Parsley Onion relish and a tangy Feta Cheese Sauce. [TVG] R on 7/17 1am; 8/2 4pm; 8/3 1am

We visit 100% Natural, a favorite stop in Playa Del Carmen for tropical fruit juices, creamy yogurt shakes and exotic fruit plates. At home, Rick transforms Mexican papaya into a surprising dessert he calls Caramelized Papaya with Mexican Cheese-think of a tropical version of apple pie with cheddar cheese. Some of the enormous adobe pyramids that still tower over the vast Peruvian countryside are surveyed. South American archaeological expert Axel Nielsen guides host David Yetman through the premier museum of South America, the Royal Tombs of Sipan, which house some of the richest gold artifacts in the world. From there, they trek to Huaca del Sol and Huaca del Luna, immense pyramids that emphasize the duality and symbolism of the pre-Incan societies. The last archeological stop is Chan Chan, an area known for its walls of design and decoration, which stretch as far as the eye can see. Finally, local fisherman construct and then navigate their boats made out of totora reeds in the same manner as their pre-Ican ancestors. Observe how these "caballitos del mar" (sea horses) are used daily to harvest fish from the sea. [TVG] R on 7/17 2am

Nearby, a visit to Auschwitz teaches a timeless, soul-searching lesson. Systematically destroyed during World War II, Warsaw is a lively, thriving capital once again. History Detectives "Atocha Spanish Silver/Lucy Parsons Book/Ernie Pyle's Typewriter" 00:56 #504Z PBS
In 1985, one of the greatest treasure discoveries was made off the Florida Keys when the wreck of the Spanish ship Atocha was found. On board were some 40 tons of silver and gold, which in 1622 had been heading from the New World to the Spanish treasury as the means to fund the Thirty Years' War. A man from Cedartown, Georgia, was a diver on that legendary find and received two silver bars as compensation for his efforts. He's long been mystified by a strange mark that appears on one of the bars--but the mark is mysteriously absent from the other bar. In Key West, Florida, host Tukufu Zuberi translates 300-year-old documents from the archives of the Spanish treasury in Seville to crack a unique code of communication among ship captains of that era. And, amid the stacks at the Wesleyan University Library, a student has found a book emblazoned with the name and address of the legendary anarchist Lucy Parsons.
