This first episode of three is a stunning introduction to the remarkable island economy of Ireland, which has progressed from one of Europe's poorest, to one with the second largest GNP in Europe. It begins in Dublin, and then explores Ireland's canal system, which spans the country and is experiencing a rebirth as a tourist attraction for canal cruising. The rock of Cashel is home to one of the more spectacular castle ruins in Ireland, and also home to the performing dance troupe of Bru Boru, which keeps visitos on the edge of their seats with stunning performances of historic dance and music. A historic village, Colonel is the base to enjoy and experience rural life in Southern Ireland, with horseback riding, and the ubiquitous Irish pub, as centerpieces of the story. Finally, the last day of races is experienced in the coastal village of Tramore, and the famous stud farms of County Claire are shown. [TVG]

Internationally celebrated folk artist Tommy Makem returns to the Irish countryside in this first of a 2-part special featuring Irish songs, stories, poetry, and legends, told by the master storyteller, historians, and Irish townspeople. Keady, County Armagh, is where Tommy Makem left, as a young man, to seek his fortune in America. He found fame as a member of the group The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. His trips back to Ireland have added to his encyclopedic knowledge of his homeland's history and culture. Makem showcases many of these treasures in a journey around the island, stopping at castles and cottages, monasteries, and museums. He reveals how a Victorian spinster preserved the song "Danny Boy," and where the last "high king" of Ireland is buried. Tales of Viking raids, ghostly lovers, and martyred saints are included. Another famous Irish emigrant, Frank McCourt, author of Angela's Ashes, is a special guest. [TVG]

The Irish celebrate their passion for music, which is evident through music festivals across the countryside. In August, Kilrush holds an annual music festival. The passage tombs of Knowth and Dowth are graves excavated to reveal archaeological intelligence dating back as early as 3500 BC. Newgrange, Ireland's famous megalithic mound, attracts two million visitors every year. The Moy River in Ballina, County Mayo, is a famous salmon and sea trout rivers of Ireland. In addition to saltwater and sea run fish, fly fishing inland is also popular. There are a wide variety of ancient medieval castles and fortresses to explore, such as the Blarney Castle, home of the famous "Blarney Stone." The city of Waterford, of Waterford Crystal fame, houses Reginald's Tower, the largest of six surviving towers of the wall that once enclosed medieval Waterford. [TVG]
