Simon Schama's Power of Art
"David"
00:56
#106Z
PBS
Jacques-Louis David, who had been treated well by King Louis XVII and the aristocrats, bit the hand that fed him when he got the religion of revolution. Art, he decreed in 1789, must no longer be the amusement of the mighty and the leisured, it must make citizens of mere people. It must shock, inspire and educate. So David painted for the revolution.I nternationally acclaimed scholar/writer Simon Schama explores the life and work of David. (Pt. 6 in an 8-part series).

Some of the enormous adobe pyramids that still tower over the vast Peruvian countryside are surveyed. South American archaeological expert Axel Nielsen guides host David Yetman through the premier museum of South America, the Royal Tombs of Sipan, which house some of the richest gold artifacts in the world. From there, they trek to Huaca del Sol and Huaca del Luna, immense pyramids that emphasize the duality and symbolism of the pre-Incan societies. The last archeological stop is Chan Chan, an area known for its walls of design and decoration, which stretch as far as the eye can see. Finally, local fisherman construct and then navigate their boats made out of totora reeds in the same manner as their pre-Ican ancestors. Observe how these "caballitos del mar" (sea horses) are used daily to harvest fish from the sea.

Unlike most of the world's major rivers which empty into the sea, the Okavango River in Africa empties into a desert. Remarkably, the waters do not always evaporate in the wetlands of the Okavanga Delta. Extended rainfalls periodically caused the Okavango to overflow, flooding the desert. The program documents this ecosystem so complex that the footsteps of an elephant can alter the flow of streams that feed vegetation, and the root of a palm tree can help create a new island. Science and technology are changing lives at a dizzying pace. This premiere program in a 5-times-a-year magazaine show helps people keep up with the fast-moving frontiers of science and technology, which draws on a limitless range of potential stories: from the secrets of the genetic code to fuel cells and hydrogen-powered cars, to the battle against cancer and heart disease, to the quest to slow down aging and "grow" new organs. Hidden clues in genes will soon enable doctors to tell whether one is likely to get a major disease, perhaps decades before it happens. Advanced "nanotech" materials will lead to unimaginably tiny and powerful computers. The first private space probe reaching low-earth orbit opens up a whole new era in aerospace. And increasingly sophisticated studies of climate change offer unsettling evidence of the environment children and grandchildren will inherit. Robert Krulwich, of "Nightline" and ABC News, hosts.

Included are historical re-enactments, rare vintage lantern slides, and sophisticated computer animation. In 1985, one of the greatest treasure discoveries was made off the Florida Keys when the wreck of the Spanish ship Atocha was found. On board were some 40 tons of silver and gold, which in 1622 had been heading from the New World to the Spanish treasury as the means to fund the Thirty Years' War. A man from Cedartown, Georgia, was a diver on that legendary find and received two silver bars as compensation for his efforts. He's long been mystified by a strange mark that appears on one of the bars--but the mark is mysteriously absent from the other bar. In Key West, Florida, host Tukufu Zuberi translates 300-year-old documents from the archives of the Spanish treasury in Seville to crack a unique code of communication among ship captains of that era. And, amid the stacks at the Wesleyan University Library, a student has found a book emblazoned with the name and address of the legendary anarchist Lucy Parsons.
