High in the foothills of the Bolivian Andes, in the historic village of Santiago de K, life continues nearly the same as it has for centuries. An archeological site nearby reveals, through ancient ruins, just how little life has changed over the centuries. Here, at over 12,600 feet above sea level, in the highest desert in the world, residents harvest the endemic potatoes and quinoa to use to barter for outside goods. Much of the native Quechua customs, music, and lifestyle have their roots in age-old traditions. There are some interesting, relatively modern influences, such as the Carnaval celebration of the first potato crop of the season.

Black Star Line Stock Certificates: A North Carolina woman found two stock certificates, purchased by her great grandfather in 1919. What looked like a Marcus Garvey signature on the papers saved them. Garvey founded the steamship company through his United Negro Improvement Association. He fought for African American economic self-reliance and political self-determination. Mickey Mouse's Origin: Popular history has it that Mickey Mouse was born from a drawing sketched on a napkin by Walt Disney, in 1928. A San Francisco toy collector believes his small mouse figurine may turn the legend on its ears. With a patent label that says "Pat. Aug. 17, 1926," the figure appears to have been produced 2 years before Disney created Mickey Mouse. Pro-Nazi Newspaper: A Hearne, TX, resident heard rumors that a WWII German POW camp was based in her town. A tiny printing block just may hold the key to this mystery.

A difficult journey that begins in hopelessness and shame for thousands of women in Ethiopia ends in a productive new life in this award-winning documentary produced by Mary Olive Smith. Filmed in a starkly beautiful landscape, the film juxtaposes the isolated lives of village women who are outcasts because of their medical condition, with the faraway hospital that offers a miracle after a long and arduous trek--a "walk to beautiful". The film tells the personal stories of rural women who make their way to Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, seeking treatment for obstetric fistula, a life-shattering complication of childbirth that was once common in the pre-industrial United States but that is now relegated to the poorest regions of the world.
