As the Nimitz makes its final transit from Hawaii to California, the sailors and Marines on board prepare to return to their homes and families. For those still on board, the "Tiger Cruise" provides a buffer, but there's no such transition for those who fly home early from Hawaii. As the Nimitz returns to her home port of San Diego, sailors and Marines reflect on the deployment and take stock of what they've achieved. (10 of 10)

Rick shows how to plan a fiesta that's both big and gourmet. His spectacular menu for 25 features Mexican takes on Spanish classics. For starters, there's a sparkling Sangria Mexicana accented with lime juice. Then along comes a chilled Roasted Poblano Gazpacho with fresh garnishes that's made ahead and assembled at the last minute so the vegetables stay nice and crisp. Then, it's a Mexican accent on that most iconic Spanish main dish of all, Mexican Paella with Shrimp, Mussels and Chorizo. Rick constructs a simple outdoor brick fire pit, custom-built for an enormous three-foot paella pan. (2 of 13)

Ranging in altitude up to 16,500 feet above sea level, the wild, frigid desert of southwestern Bolivia is full of natural treasures. The harsh landscape is dominated by the towering Andean volcanoes and lakes, or lagoons, which are actually basins, into which the meager snowmelt drains and cannot escape. These intensely colored, brackish lakes are home to some of the world's hardiest animals, namely three different species of flamingo. In cliffs near the lakes, bizcachas (a rabbit-sized rodent) are one of the few mammals in the region. The bizarre-looking yareta also grows along the rugged rock faces. Resembling massive patches of moss, these huge, thick plants are thousands of years old. These are just some of the many wonders found in the highest desert in the world.

The Chisholm Trail: In the decades following the Civil War, more than six million cattle were herded from Texas to the railhead in Kansas, in one of the greatest known migrations of animals. In the small town of Donna, TX, near the Mexican border, a historic marker declares that the famous Chilsom Trail ran through this area, yet many dispute the idea that the trail ever made it this far south. Harry Houdini Poster: A Chicago, IL, man was replacing roof insulation, when he realized that the old material contained scores of old posters for a "Harry Houdini" magic show. The theater where the performance allegedly took place no longer exists. The contributor is eager to determine the poster's authenticity, as well as to learn what kind of show Houdini was performing in Chicago. McKinley Casket Flag: A Battle Ground, WA, man has a flag that he claims once draped the casket of 25th U.S. President William McKinley, after he was assassinated in 1901. The Detectives check it out. First program in an 11-part season.

A woman in New Hampshire inherited her husband's aunt's belongings, which include a curious late-18th-century book titled Trials of Patriots. It contains what appears to be President John Adams' signature in three places, and includes an inscription, "Charles Adams from His Father, 1794." The book is a collection of transcripts chronicling the sedition trials of Irish and Scottish radicals. Gwendolyn Wright examines the Adams family's correspondence and conflict as they balanced home life with public service. A woman in Portland, Oregon, has a curious spoon that once belonged to her grandmother. It's known in her family as "the spoon of atrocities." An eerie scene is etched into its sterling silver bowl. Wes Cowan explores the clash between white settlers and Sioux in the mid-19th century--and a struggle that led to the largest mass execution in American history. Then, Elyse Luray investigates the little-known story of the NC-4 and its historic voyage.

A Civil War enthusiast in Pennsylvania owns a striking vintage photograph that depicts about 20 older white men in full dress uniform, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with two black men. In Reconstruction-era America, association between blacks and whites was frequently taboo. Their bond, it turns out, was the Grand Army of the Republic, a remarkable fraternal order organized for war veterans. The men's common struggle with post traumatic stress transcended race. Host Elyse Luray heads to New York, and Washington, DC, to investigate the first national social group to challenge the color barrier. In a forgotten corner of a Washington, DC, public library, a photo archivist has discovered what may be a momentous piece of history. It's a list of signatures from public figures of the early 1800s, including President Thomas Jefferson.
