Piecing them together, the intern was surprised to find they were painted on the back of a Japanese-American internment notice from 1942. What is the story behind these paintings? The Lewis and Clark Cane: A Minnesota man has an old wooden cane that the family tale says is one which Meriwether Lewis and William Clark gave to his ancestor, in return for assistance they received during the famous Corps of Discovery expedition. At Geppi's Entertainment Museum, appraiser Phil Weiss gives host Mark L. Walberg a collector's eye view of comic strip art. At the Baltimore Convention Center, a wide array of objects are brought in, including a magnificent bench crafted by master woodworker George Nakashima; a unique two-sided painting by B.J.O. Nordfelt; and a rare violin made in 1798 by renowned French violinmaker Nicolas Lupot, accompanied by a bow crafted in the style of Dominique Peccatte, one of the most influential bow makers in history. The lobotomy was hailed by The New York Times as a "surgery of the soul" and "history making," a groundbreaking medical procedure that promised hope to the most distressed families and desolate mentally ill patients. Championed by a young and ambitious neurologist named Walter J. Freeman, what began as an operation of last resort was soon being performed at some 50 state asylums, often with devastating results. Only a decade after his rise to fame, Freeman was decried as a moral monster and the lobotomy as one of the most barbaric mistakes of modern medicine. Through interviews with medical historians, psychiatrists who worked with Freeman and the desperate families who sought his help, this program tells the gripping tale of medical intervention gone awry. The emotional reunion of the classmates--now in their mid-40s is captured, as they reflect upon the turbulent Civil Rights era and the humble man whose timeless lessons of love and nonviolence touched their hearts and minds and shaped their young spirits.
