"A Coat of Many Colors: The Israelites In Egypt"
00:56
#102H
(Rpt)
PBS
(DVS)
Bruce Feiler continues his journey through the greatest stories ever told, by retracing Joseph's path to Egypt, after his brothers sell him into bondage. When Joseph interprets the Pharaoh's dreams, he rises from slave to the heights of power, and even brings his brothers and father, Jacob, to live in Egypt. Feiler travels from the great temple of Karnak in Luxor, formerly ancient Thebes, to the pyramids and sphinx of Giza, to the royal burial tombs in the Valley of the Kings. As he treks by camel, boat, horseback, and foot, he discovers how the ancient Egyptian culture and religion influenced the Israelites during their centuries-long stay in Egypt. Beginning at the shallow waters of the Nile, Feiler retraces the story of one of the Bible's greatest figures, Moses, and his eventual confrontation with the Pharaoh, and the command to let his people go. Did the Israelites build the pyramids? What could have caused the 10 plagues? Was it really the Red Sea that Moses crossed? Second of 3 programs.

The second of three episodes in the Galapagos Islands finds host David Yetman hunting large cacti on a desert island. Along the way, he discovers flamingos in the middle of a huge lava lake, ghost crabs (so named for their quick disappearing act), and a variety of plant species endemic to certain islands. Yetman also explores the nesting grounds of sea turtles, and finds a unique post office on the island of Floreana, where pirates and whalers have used the same wooden container for centuries to leave or take mail, depending on its destination. The program also examines the strategies different animal species must employ to cooperate in such close proximity on the islands and how the plant and animal life is impacted by the surrounding climatic forces.

"Missing In MiG Alley"
00:56
#3418
PBS
(DVS)
Russian and American fighters clashed over Korea in one of the fastest dogfights ever seen. This was the world's first jet war, pitting the two most advanced planes of their day, the American F-86 Sabre and the Soviet MiG-15, in furious air battles that pushed their pilots' skills to the limit. The epicenter of the air campaign was MiG Alley, a strip of airspace between the Korean-Chinese border. Flying higher and faster than ever before, American and British pilots had little idea of the hidden dangers that awaited them if they were shot down. Thirty-one Sabre pilots are believed to have survived crash landings, and the evidence suggests that a few of the pilots were captured and secretly imprisoned in Russia. NOVA follows the poignant and sometimes harrowing efforts of family members to trace what happened to pilots who went missing over half a century ago.

"How Sweet It Is: The Story of Sugar"

Sugar started out in Asia, traveled to the Middle East, and then to Europe--first as a medicine, and then as a rare spice. During his second voyage in 1493, Columbus brought it to the Caribbean, where it changed into a common necessity, becoming a key element in the Caribbean slave trade and an early example of capitalist manufacturing. Burt finds out why people who had a sweet tooth had a better chance of surviving than people who didn't, and how sugar became the basis for England's international trade--a key element in the control of Britain's working class, and an essential part of the temperance movement.

Host Bill Gaither salutes a legendary gospel quartet and its beloved frontmen, George Younce and the late Glen Payne, in this tribute to The Cathedrals, which showcases memorable performances of the Cathedrals from 12 years of Gaither Homecoming videos, as well as vintage clips from their 50 years together. Gaither and Cathedral co-founder and bass singer George Younce reminiscence about the remarkable history of the famed quartet. Gaither says The Cathedrals "Have given us some incredible memories and a whole lot of laughs." The quartet scored many firsts for gospel music: the first gospel group to appear on the Today Show, the first to perform and record in the Holy Land, and to record an album with strings. Before the Cathedrals retired in 1999, and Payne died in 2000, they garnered a dozen Gospel Music Association Dove Awards, almost 40 Singing News Fan Awards, and 11 Grammy nominations.
