Damrell's Fire 00:56 APT (DVS)
On a mild November weekend in 1872, a spark in a downtown basement eventually reduced Boston's commercial center to 65 acres of rubble. But the damage, including the loss of life, could have been much worse. The extraordinary life is traced of John Damrell, the courageous fire chief who directed the defense that saved the city's densely populated neighborhoods. He would forever change firefighting history, by shifting the nation's focus from saving not only property, but lives. Concerned with the water supply, lack of fire equipment, and delayed response times, Damrell advocated long-term improvements in construction practices and the establishment of inspection services, with the authority to enforce fire and building codes. A virtual model of 1872 Boston is included, along with turn-of-the-century archival films, rare full-color lithographs, evocative original music, and trenchant interviews with historians and firefighters. The series spans five continents, and uses historical re-enactments to illustrate Diamond's theories, explaining why societies developed differently in different parts of the world--and why some became conquerors, and others--the conquered. Warplane "Age of Stealth" 00:56 #104Z (Rpt) PBS (DVS)
Over the trenches of WW I, the "eye in the sky" had been indispensable. Since then, developers have worked endlessly to make planes harder to spot and shoot down. Speed worked at first, then the ability to fly high, but each advance was eventually met by a counter-advance that all but neutralized it. Until, that is, the birth of the computer. With the computer age came avionics-systems to control planes that humans could never fly. These systems, combined with new materials, designs and paints, as well as the unwavering commitment and singular vision of men like Skunk Works' Ben Rich, gave rise to the most recent revolution in military aviation-stealth planes. These planes are all but invisible to enemy eyes. Stealth technology has transformed warfare, and together with ever-advanced precision ordnance and purely autonomous planes, has positioned the world's most advanced air forces for a future where in-cockpit pilots may no longer be necessary. Final program in a 4-part series. [TVPG] R on 7/24 2pm; 8/31 10am
