America's Lost Landscape: The Tallgrass Prairie 00:56 PBS
Prior to Euro-American settlement in the 1820s, one of the major landscape features of North America was 240 million acres of tallgrass prairie. Between 1830 and 1900--in the space of a single lifetime, the tallgrass prairie was steadily transformed to farmland. This drastic change in the landscape also brought about an enormous social change for Native Americans; in an equally short time their cultural imprint was reduced in essence to a handful of place-names appearing on maps. This program examines the record of human struggle, triumph and defeat that prairie history exemplifies, including the history and culture of America's aboriginal inhabitants. The film also highlights prairie preservation efforts and explores how the tallgrass prairie ecosystem may serve as a model for a sustainable agriculture of the future. [TVG]

Design: e2 (The Economics of Being Environmentally Conscious) "The Green Apple" 00:26 #101H (Rpt) PBSPL
With each passing hour in the U.S., 365 acres of wilderness, countryside, farmland, and native habitat disappear under the foundations of new houses, creating a new group of people using cars that pollute, lawns that suck water, and air that requires conditioning. The building of shelter consumes one-sixth of the world's fresh water supply, one-fourth of its wood harvest, two-fifths of its fossil fuels and manufactured materials, and one-half its waste stream. The first episode looks at sustainable architecture begins in New York, a city that is greening its industrial skyline with ground-breaking projects. Some of Manhattan's most prominent and technologically advanced structures are explored, like One Bryant Park and The Solaire, as well as the innovative minds behind them; illustrating how the ubiquitous skyscraper can be a model of environmental responsibility. Brad Pitt narrates this 6-part season exploring the social, political, cultural, environmental, and economic issues of sustainable architecture. [TVG]

American Masters "Willa Cather: The Road Is All" 01:26 #1807H (Rpt) PBS
In 1883, Willa Cather was plucked from her luxurious home in Virginia, and dropped into Nebraska's tall grass prairies. The experience terrified and exhilarated her, becoming the force behind her great novels: O Pioneer, The Song of the Lark, My Antonia, Death Comes for the Archbishop, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning One of Ours. Her life remains mysterious--she destroyed much personal correspondence, and had restrictions concerning her work. She was educated and well-traveled; she smoked, she did not suffer fools, and she often dressed in slacks. She's a hero to women writers, and an inspiration to women readers, rediscovered in every decade for the past 100 years. The endless prairie gives texture to Cather's writing, while bringing the frontier to life--restoring its grandeur and desolationan. David Strathairn narrates. Marcia Gay Harden (Oscar winner in "Pollock"), provides the voice of Willa Cather. [TVPG] R on 8/8 8am; 8/20 10am

It was the greatest flood of the past two million years, and it posed a giant scientific riddle. A maverick geologist became convinced that thousand-foot-deep floodwaters had scoured out vast areas of the American northwest, near the end of the last ice age. Mainstream scientists scorned his theory, while he searched patiently for answers to what could have triggered such an inconceivably violent event. Finally, an ingenious solution silenced the skeptics: traces of an enormous ice dam, half a mile high, which had blocked a valley in present-day Montana, and created an enormous lake behind it. With the help of stunningly realistic animation, this program goes back to the Ice Age to reveal what happened when the dam broke, unleashing a titanic flood that swept herds of woolly mammoth and everything else into oblivion. New studies show that the devastation of Indonesia's forests has helped to make it the world's third-largest emitter of carbon dioxide--exceeded only by the U.S. and China. How to reduce these harmful greenhouse gas emissions? Dorjee Sun, a 29-year-old Australian green entrepreneur, thinks he has a solution: his idea involves selling the carbon credits represented by large forest areas in three Indonesian provinces to polluters in the West. "Burning Season" follows Sun on a whirlwind trip to boardrooms around the world--from Starbucks to eBay to Merrill Lynch--as he tries to convince skeptical financiers that his proposal is viable.
