#1502H
(Rpt)
APTEX
Host David Yetman hops into a 50-year-old BMW motorcycle sidecar to explore Wyoming's mysterious Red Desert, one of the least-known and most-threatened deserts in North America. Also called the "Great American Desert," this eight-million-acre area has vast and varying landscapes, including the largest active sand dune system in North America and the Great Divide Basin--the only place in the U.S. where the Continental Divide splits before rejoining. It is also steeped in history and fable, with ties to the Oregon Trail and the gold rush, as well as its share of ghost towns. Though it is high and cold, the Red Desert is home to the largest desert elk herd in the nation, the largest migratory game herd in the continental U.S., and over 350 wildlife species. Other highlights include a look at wild mustangs, petroglyphs, and aspen groves. But all of these wonders exist under the constant threat of future oil and gas development.

For decades, hopes for alleviating global warming have fallen to the development of "renewable" energies like wind and solar power. These are energy producers that do not use coal, gas or other carbon-based fuels that are the main reason our planet's surface is warming a little bit more every year. The most promising renewable has always been solar power. However, even with decades of solar power research, scientists still don't know if it's a reliable source of electricity.

What role did the jungle play in humanity's past, and what can it tell about the future? The final hour looks for clues among the primates of the rainforests, and traces of ancient civilizations that thrived there, only to vanish. In the Central African Republic, Chloe Cipolletta studies Western lowland gorillas. She picks up the trail of a male and his son. Chloe and her companions come to rest, in clear sight of their quarry--leading to a heart-stopping moment in wildlife filmmaking. Capuchin monkeys in Brazil are seen using rocks, the same weight as themselves, to smash nuts open. Also included are chilling sequences in which a chimp pursues a colobus monkey in an assault. A group of chimps murder one of their own kind. Also, a look is devoted to the human imprint left by cities carved out, and then abandoned and reclaimed by nature. Mayan ruins in Guatemala, and the remnants of Angkor Wat, in Cambodia, are also explored.

Soon after the Spanish colonists arrived in the Americas they tried to grow grapes so they could make wine. It was the beverage of choice and essential for communion in the Catholic Church. But wine grapes couldn't survive the dry heat of the Caribbean. The priests who had come to the Americas with the Spanish colonists became concerned that they had entered a world created by a devil that had no use for wine and its relationship to Christ. Five hundred years later the Americas have become a winemaker's heaven. Burt explores the history, folklore and culture of winemaking in America from the earliest plantings, through prohibition and up to our present vintages, which are considered to be some of the best in the world.
