Documenting The Face of America 00:56 PBS (DVS)
The inspirational "behind the lens" stories of some of the most celebrated photographers in history are told. Narrated by Julian Bond, the program highlights the forgotten collective pieces of our past. The courage and vision of legendary photographers and artists such as Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, Gordon Parks, Marion Post Wolcott, Russell Lee and others who worked with the U.S. government under the unorthodox leadership of Roy Stryker from 1935 to 1943 are celebrated. Together they changed the course of photography, but more important, changed history, as Americans saw what life was like across the nation for the first time--from North to South, from East to West, for rich and poor and for black and white. Actor-songwriter Tim Grimm guides viewers through this educational, entertaining, and often-whimsical look at covered bridges, as a direct connection to the past, an elegant solution to a 19th-century transportation problem, and the basis for a modern tourist industry. Scenic images of covered bridges are included, in rural and small-town settings in Indiana, Ohio, Oregon, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont. The program also visits covered bridge festivals in Oregon, Indiana, and western Pennsylvania, to explore the modern tourist industry built around these historic structures.

Guzman had supported Pinochet's 1973 coup--waged as an anti-Communist crusade that left the democratically elected president, Salvador Allende, and thousands of others dead or "disappeared." The filmmakers trace the judge's descent into what he calls "the abyss," where he uncovers the past--including his own role in the tragedy. The Judge and the General reveals one of the 20th century's most notorious episodes and tells a cautionary tale about violating human rights in the name of "higher ideals."
