"Burning Season"

#704
PBS
As temperatures and sea levels rise, the world is scrambling to stop global warming--but international consensus is slow to emerge, and debate over how to slow climate change continues. WIDE ANGLE travels to Indonesia, where rainforest areas equivalent to 300 soccer fields are cut down and burnt every hour to clear land for crops such as oil palms. New studies show that the devastation of Indonesia's forests has helped to make it the world's third-largest emitter of carbon dioxide--exceeded only by the U.S. and China. How to reduce these harmful greenhouse gas emissions? Dorjee Sun, a 29-year-old Australian green entrepreneur, thinks he has a solution: his idea involves selling the carbon credits represented by large forest areas in three Indonesian provinces to polluters in the West. "Burning Season" follows Sun on a whirlwind trip to boardrooms around the world--from Starbucks to eBay to Merrill Lynch--as he tries to convince skeptical financiers that his proposal is viable.

Then, Ming goes on to prepare dishes that combine the two: Colossal Shrimp Spiced Tempura with Lemongrass Aioli, Tomato and Mozzarella Basil Tempura with 3-Vinegar Aioli, and Chicken Breast Spiced Tempura with Sambal Aioli. Special guest and master sommelier Andrea Immer Robinson joins Ming in the studio to discuss the best wine pairings for each dish, and prepares her Seafood Tempura with Sesame Aioli.

Mark Oliver Everett, better known as E, is the lead singer of U.S. cult band the EELS. What most of his fans don't know is that Mark's father, Hugh Everett III, was one of America's top quantum physicists. In 1957, Hugh Everett came up with a revolutionary theory that predicted the existence of parallel universes. The idea quickly seeped into popular culture, but only recently has it been accepted by mainstream physicists. The film follows the wry and charismatic Mark, who had been estranged from his father, as he travels across America to learn about the father he never knew. It is only by entering the paradoxical world of quantum mechanics that Mark can hope to understand why he was such a stranger to his own father.

Since the 1960s, the American university has often been less a free marketplace of ideas than a combat zone where partisan groups forcefully and sometimes fiercely argue their positions on national and world affairs. Focusing on the University of California-Berkeley and Columbia University in New York, pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian students struggle over the competing claims of Zionism and Palestinian nationalism, over what history teaches and whether absolute demands can ever lead to honorable compromise. The seemingly intractable conflict half a world away has forced these students to think about allegiances to family, ethnicity and religion and, above all, about the need to take a stand that will define them and their ideals.

The year was 1968. A war in a foreign land was tearing people apart, and the president's approval rating was at an all-time low. The country was divided. Many felt America was lost, without a moral compass. And young Americans took to the streets to change the world. During the 40th anniversary of this pivotal year in world history, Independent Lens is pleased to announce that CHICAGO 10. The program explores the buildup to and unraveling of the Chicago Conspiracy Trial, where history played out as both tragedy and farce. Visceral and emotional, the film brings viewers inside the courtroom to experience firsthand the riveting drama, legal wrangling, and raucous political theater. During the infamous 1968 Democratic national convention, antiwar protesters--denied permits to march and blocked from the political process--fought for their right to be heard. "Chicago 10" is a stylized, innovative approach that gives contemporary history a forced perspective.

PBS
In the late 1950s, Bob Newhart, a shy Chicago accountant tried getting some extra cash by doing radio sketches. By 1960, before he even stepped onto the stand-up circuit, "The Button-Down Mind" hit gold as Album of the Year, and won a Grammy for Best New Artist. His mildly nervous humor about the everyday guy, exemplified in "The Driving Instructor," helped spearhead the explosion in American comedy--at clubs, on records, and TV variety shows. "The Bob Newhart Show" and, later, "Newhart," portrayed the sane man caught in a world of zany characters gone mad. Since then, Newhart has continued performing stand-up dates, and was recognized with a 2004 Emmy nomination for his first dramatic role on "ER." His legacy has influenced Jerry Seinfeld, Ellen DeGeneres, Richard Pryor, and others.

PBS
