Just below the ranges, the lack of rains combined with invasive species has caused additional wildfires that have devastated portions of the Sonoran Desert. The link between drought and fire has pre-historic roots and host David Yetman and Tom Swetnam from the University of Arizona's Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research travel through the desert to higher elevations that contain evidence of drought, fire, and civilization. An Oklahoma pawn store clerk's customer had a pawned antique watch, engraved with a potentially historic inscription. Could this watch have been a gift from the fearless lawman, Wyatt Earp, to the dentist, gambler, and gunman "Doc" Holliday, perhaps in gratitude for his help fighting the Clanton gang at the OK Corral? In Louisiana, a resident owns a Civil War photograph featuring a fine-boned, slight-figured soldier. The soldier is identified as a member of the 2nd Louisiana Infantry--but could it be a woman in disguise? In a San Francisco archive, an intern discovered a set of 10 postcard-size watercolors of what appears to be a prison camp. Piecing them together, it looks as if they were painted on the back of a Japanese-American internment notice from 1942. The team investigates. R on 8/4 2pm; 8/17 4am

It was the greatest flood of the past two million years, and it posed a giant scientific riddle. A maverick geologist became convinced that thousand-foot-deep floodwaters had scoured out vast areas of the American northwest, near the end of the last ice age. Mainstream scientists scorned his theory, while he searched patiently for answers to what could have triggered such an inconceivably violent event. Finally, an ingenious solution silenced the skeptics: traces of an enormous ice dam, half a mile high, which had blocked a valley in present-day Montana, and created an enormous lake behind it. With the help of stunningly realistic animation, this program goes back to the Ice Age to reveal what happened when the dam broke, unleashing a titanic flood that swept herds of woolly mammoth and everything else into oblivion.
