The third and final episode in the Galapagos Islands features some of the "newer" islands, which are "only" a few hundred thousand years old. There are plenty of interesting creatures in the waters around these islands, like marine iguanas--the only known iguanas that swim in salt water and can stay underwater for more than an hour--and the Flightless Cormorant--a bird that uses its stubby wings to swim, rather than fly. On Isabela Island, the crew visits Darwin's Lake--a saltwater lake--to study flower color and pollination; and spends some time in Zodiac boats, finding penguins endemic to the islands.

Rudy Maxa takes a whirlwind tour of four cities that represent a bit of the old, and bit of the new, in Europe. He shows how to get the most out of one-day visits to Copenhagen, Berlin, Munich, and Rome. Tips on maximizing travel memories from a 24-hour stay in a European big city are given.

A young mother, the victim of a car accident that has left her paralyzed, travels to Portugal to undergo a radical treatment. Adult stem cells are to be harvested from her nose, amplified, and then injected into her spine. The hope is that, instead of forming scar tissue, the cells will renew and heal the spinal cord. Even the experts are excited about the results. The front line of regenerative medicine is followed, as spinal cord and heart patients undergo stem cell treatments; and their recovery levels are tracked in the months that follow. This is just the tip of the iceberg in a promising, but controversial, field--that has the potential to revolutionize the way medicine is practiced.

On December 26, 2004, a series of tidal waves killed hundreds of thousands, and devastated communities around the Indian Ocean. This program reveals how these deadly waves were triggered by one of the most powerful earthquakes recorded this century. With around 100 tsunamis striking the world's coastlines each decade, this program investigates what made the recent event so powerful and catastrophic, presenting a chilling minute-by-minute picture of what happened that fateful morning. In 2004, scientists at the Pacific Center registered the massive quake and tsunami risk in the Indian Ocean. With the help of clear explanations and animation, together with the human stories of individuals caught up in the catastrophe, the program is both illuminating and heartbreaking. The question is asked: can an effective early warning system help avert another such catastrophe?

"The Crucible of Civilization"

#101Z
(Rpt)
PBS
Jared Diamond's sometimes-controversial theories about the course of human civilization are presented. The first episode of three proposes that a society's potential for advanced development was not determined by race or creed, or by time and experience, but by access to domesticated animals and cultivated plants. Diamond's Pulitzer Prize-winning work offers a revealing look at the rise and fall of societies through the lens of geography, technology, biology, and economics--forces symbolized by the power of guns, germs, and steel. The series spans five continents, and uses historical re-enactments to illustrate Diamond's theories, explaining why societies developed differently in different parts of the world--and why some became conquerors, and others--the conquered. Jared Diamond hosts.

A Las Vegas man owns an old Continental Armymuster roll issued by the town of Falmouth, MA, in 1780. Among the 16 men listed is "Paul Cuffee." The contributor wants to know if this could be evidence of an unknown episode in the life of Cuffee, a remarkable African American who was a whaling captain, shipbuilder, and early advocate of the "Back to Africa" movement. And why was a baseball field in Atlantic City, NJ, named after an African-American ballplayer in a time of intense racial tension? John Henry "Pop" Lloyd was a famed shortstop in the Negro Leagues. The Rio Sonora, in northwest Mexico, begins at a spring just south of the U.S. border and cuts through the Sonoran Desert, on its way to the Gulf of California, near Kino Bay. Life in the Rio Sonora Valley has survived on the river's modest flows for centuries. The Opata Indians were the most recent of the native peoples, and were living along its banks, when the Spaniards arrived. Although they have long since disappeared, their lyrical names for many of the towns remain. The rough terrain and uncertain water supply have helped the area maintain its rural roots. Local delicacies, spicy chilies, historic missions, and a relaxed way of life all await a trip though the valley of the Rio Sonora.
