"Toward The Promised Land: Forty Years in the Desert"
00:56
#103H
(Rpt)
PBS
(DVS)
Feiler experiences the stark reality of the Sinai desert, where it's a struggle simply to survive. He finds the locations said to be where God provided water and food for the Israelites--and discovers the secret of the tamarisk tree, which produces a sweet, honey-like substance called "manna." The desert is also a haven for spiritual pilgrims. Feiler visits St. Catherine's Monastery, the oldest operating church in the world. He attends the service, a powerful, unchanged ritual of 1,500 years, and sees what's claimed to be the real "burning bush" from which God spoke to Moses. One of the monks, Texas-born Father Justin, shows him the monastery's library of priceless religious art and manuscripts. Feiler climbs Mt. Sinai, where Moses received the Ten Commandments. Feiler travels to the "lost city" of Petra, in Jordan, where the Israelites may have lived for many years. Nearing the end of Moses' journey, Feiler climbs Mt. Nebo, where God showed Moses the Promised Land. Final program of three.

APTEX
Montezuma Castle, a five-story 20-room cliff dwelling, served as a "high-rise apartment building" for prehistoric Sinagua Indians, over 600 years ago. Now, it serves the same purpose to a colony of bats. Concern over the possible harm that these latter-day residents may be doing has led to some very interesting hands-on research, to study the impact of bat habitats on cultural landmarks. The program also visits Tonto National Monument, where the scale of the ruins makes capturing bats a test of wills and ingenuity, and Chiricahua National Monument, to see how one of Arizona's natural gems is the perfect location for collecting data on tree-roosting bats. This episode finds bats in hand, in roosts, and in the air, to learn how bat population density affects humans.

An evolving technology is introduced that looks directly into the brain, to pinpoint and chart the very origin of deception. Given its seeming ability to gauge whether or not an individual is lying, the F.B.I. and C.I.A. hope brain fingerprinting will become one of the most significant breakthroughs in crime detection since the advent of DNA analysis. Following court cases and local police departments, the way this technology could revolutionize the legal system is examined. But, even as brain fingerprinting seems poised to be a major step forward, critics are raising scientific, ethical, and legal questions. Is the system all it's cracked up to be--or are there other, more-promising techniques in the quest for the perfect lie detector? Final program of the season.

On December 26, 2004, a series of tidal waves killed hundreds of thousands, and devastated communities around the Indian Ocean. This program reveals how these deadly waves were triggered by one of the most powerful earthquakes recorded this century. With around 100 tsunamis striking the world's coastlines each decade, this program investigates what made the recent event so powerful and catastrophic, presenting a chilling minute-by-minute picture of what happened that fateful morning. In 2004, scientists at the Pacific Center registered the massive quake and tsunami risk in the Indian Ocean. With the help of clear explanations and animation, together with the human stories of individuals caught up in the catastrophe, the program is both illuminating and heartbreaking. The question is asked: can an effective early warning system help avert another such catastrophe?

When Columbus set out from Spain, his objective was to get King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella into the black pepper business. He believed that the islands he landed on in the Caribbean were off the coast of China. When the natives showed him chilies, he decided to call them peppers, and he had two good reasons: First, when it hit his tongue, it felt like black pepper. Second, and more importantly, he was getting paid to find "peppers," and so he did. This program looks at how the hot pepper spread around the world and changed the way people cook, from China to India to Texas. Hot peppers are followed into outer space to find out how they affect brains, how they help to cure the common cold, and how they may soon be used by pharmaceutical companies as the primary ingredient for 21st century pain killers.

For more than 50 years, as lead singer for both the Statesmen and the Imperials, Jake Hess' was the voice that was much revered, admired, and emulated, even by Elvis Presley, who listed Jake as his favorite singer. Bigger than life--seemingly indestructible--Jake's contagious spirit was adored by young and old alike, making him one of the most beloved people in gospel music. This is a fitting memoriam to the late Hess, including memorable performances from the Gaither Homecoming series of videos, which contribute to the already rich memories, gracious spirit, and eternal perspective he left, by way of his golden voice. The musical highlights are punctuated by special remembrances by Jake's close friend of many years, host Bill Gaither, which adds yet another element of poignancy to this warm, memorable tribute.
