Chasing Churchill: In Search of My Grandfather
"The Other Country"
00:56
#102H
PBS
Winston Churchill's public life was a remarkable journey. Starting as a Second Lieutenant in the Army, he rose through the political world to become Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and lead Britain to victory against the Axis powers. But Churchill's life involved another, much more private journey. It was a journey in search of himself. In this second of three parts, Churchill's granddaughter Celia travels to the United States, birthplace of Winston Churchill's mother, and Egypt, a lure for Churchill at crucial moments in his life. He liberally samples pub life, while tapping toes to traditional music, and follows in the footsteps of famous Irish writers on a literary pub-crawl. Beyond Dublin, he finds inspiration in the hillsides of Glendalough, site of Ireland's revered monastery, and the Hill of Tara, home of the ancient Irish kings. A side trip to Northern Ireland's best folk park brings the Eire of yesteryear to life. Also: tips on visiting Dublin's literary sites are given.

Jim Thorpe Tickets: A Jamestown, NY, resident discovered a pair 1927 tickets for a basketball game featuring Jim Thorpe, the legendary Native-American athlete who was known for his 1912 Olympic gold medals and strength as a football and baseball player. However, none of his biographers refer to a career as a basketball player. 1667 Land Grant: A parchment may be a 1667 land grant for what is now a valuable piece of Manhattan real estate, referred to as "the land of the blacks," to an African-American named Christina, signed by General Richard Nicolls, first New York governor.

Event planning at the castle requires a team of more than 300 people to ensure everything runs smoothly. Queen Elizabeth's housekeeper, her grooms, fender smiths and flag men, picture restorers, military knights, and priests all play a critical role in preparing for events, including state visits. Six months of planning have gone into preparations for the arrival of France's President and Madame Chirac, to mark the centenary of Entente Cordiale. In addition to an official state dinner, guests are expected to be treated to an abridged version of Les Miserables, performed in the Waterloo Chamber (renamed the Music Room for the night). As protestors gather outside the castle and disrupt traffic, delays could upset all of the hard work and planning. First of 3 programs.

Two brothers from Parsippany, NJ, grew up listening to their uncle's claim that he built the engine for the Spirit of St. Louis--the plane made famous by Charles Lindbergh's nonstop flight across the Atlantic. The family legend leads to a forgotten history in Lucky Lindy's legendary flight. A man in Kansas City, MO, found two peculiar pins, wrapped in a newspaper dated 1960, that had been manipulated to contain liquid. Could these pins be the prototypes of a poison-filled pin that U2 pilot Gary Powers was carrying when his spy-plane was shot down over the Soviet Union? A New Mexico woman's great-great-grandfather was lieutenant governor of the New Mexico territory in the 1870s. She has a photo of an Indian warrior on horseback.
