What do movie special effects, the stock market, heart attacks and the rings of Saturn have in common? They're all connected by a revolutionary new branch of math called fractals, which has changed the way we see the world and opened up a vast new territory to scientific analysis and understanding. NOVA tells the dramatic story of a group of pioneering mathematicians who developed fractals from a curiosity that few took seriously to an approach that is touching nearly every branch of understanding the universe.

The guiding spirit behind this program and the subject of this episode's "Frontiers Profile," Paul MacCready became famous when, at the age of 50, he built the first human -powered airplane. In the 25 years since, he has gone on to build even more amazing machines. Alan Alda helps to test the latest creations of engineers at Aerovironment, the company MacCready founded. These range from the immense--the 200-foot-wingspan, solar-powered Helios, designed to fly in the stratosphere for up to six months at a time, the minute--the Black Widow, a six-inch-wingspan, nearly undetectable surveillance airplane built for the Department of Defense.

Rick shows how to plan a fiesta that's both big and gourmet. His spectacular menu for 25 features Mexican takes on Spanish classics. For starters, there's a sparkling Sangria Mexicana accented with lime juice. Then along comes a chilled Roasted Poblano Gazpacho with fresh garnishes that's made ahead and assembled at the last minute so the vegetables stay nice and crisp. Then, it's a Mexican accent on that most iconic Spanish main dish of all, Mexican Paella with Shrimp, Mussels and Chorizo. Rick constructs a simple outdoor brick fire pit, custom-built for an enormous three-foot paella pan. (2 of 13)
