Stimulating discussion and provocative topics make 4th Street Forum an interesting source of new ideas and thoughtful observations on Milwaukee television.

Televised on Friday evenings at 10 p.m. on MPTV-10, the forums are taped live on the preceding Thursday at noon in Turners Hall, 1034 N. 4th St. The discussions are open to the public and free of charge. The program is repeated on MPTV-36 Sundays at 3 p.m.

The weekly presentation brings together educators, attorneys, doctors, legislators, clergy, business leaders and people from many other fields to discuss issues affecting area residents. Their lively exchanges inform and enlighten an audience eager for insight into pressing questions.

Topics are chosen by the 4th Street Forum Executive Committee and special advisors. Each forum has four panelists and a moderator. Audience members are invited to become part of the discussions.

Past Topics

The forum addressed problems facing Hispanics such as assimilation, cultural identity, and economic development this year. Stem cell research, mercy killing, and the death penalty also were explored, along with tension between police departments and their communities.

Other recent subjects included the Wisconsin gender gap, obesity in children, social security, education, and division among religious groups in Wisconsin. The presentations explore the role of local leadership, governmental policy failures, and the financial challenges as well as other factors involved in dealing with each issue.

Now in its fourth season, the one-hour program is recorded September through May, with periodic breaks and occasional adjustments in taping dates. The Turners website (Milwaukeeturners.org) gives specific topics and dates.

Programs also air on MPTV-Digital (Channel 10-1 over the air and Ch. 550 on Time Warner Cable; and Channel 10-2 and Ch. 551) three hours after original broadcasts on MPTV 10 & 36.
