
Patricia Gomez, a broadcasting professional with more than 23 years of experience in public television, is the producer and host for the Milwaukee Public Television production, ¡Adelante!
A native of Mexico, Gomez spent more than 15 years at WMSLP in San Luis Potosi. She was a producer and host and also had other training and supervision responsibilities at the Mexican public television station. She has a bachelors degree in communication science from the San Luis Potosi State University in Mexico and a masters degree in education from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
Gomez gave the commencement address at UW-Platteville last spring.
On Thursday, Nov. 8, Gomez will receive an award from the Wisconsin Hispanic Lawyers Association for demonstrating courage and leadership regarding legal issues affecting Hispanics. The award, La Blanca Rosa (The White Rose) recognizes individuals who have advanced principles such as access to justice that are important to the association.
Earlier this year, Gomez was recognized by The Other America Tour of the American Civil Liberties Union for efforts by ¡Adelante! on behalf of Wisconsin youth. ¡Adelante! received the William Gorham Rice Civil Libertarian of the Year Award from the American Civil Liberties Union of Wisconsin Foundation in 2004.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children also awarded her a certificate of appreciation this year for advocacy on behalf of the 163,000 Latino children missing yearly in the United States.
Gomez has been cited by Milwaukees Shepherd Express newspaper as one of the city's most accomplished Latinas in the media area. "A native of Mexico, Gomez has made the weekly Spanish-language program, ¡Adelante! into one of the Midwest's best Latino shows for its focus on education, social justice and culture," the Milwaukee newspaper said.
Gomez is the recipient of several other honors. The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development has given Gomez an Outstanding Service Award "in appreciation for outstanding support and contribution and expertise as a speaker to the Department's National Hispanic Heritage Month celebration."
Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle has presented Gomez with a Certificate of Commendation honoring "her enthusiasm, professionalism and dedication in serving Wisconsin's Latino community and the people of the State of Wisconsin."
She also has been honored by Voces de la Frontera, a local community organization, for hosting and producing an excellent and informative program
extremely important to the Latino community.
¡Adelante! airs in Spanish with open captioning (subtitles) in English. It began its ninth season in September and airs weekly on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. and is repeated on Channel 36 Sundays at 5:30 p.m.
