Deer Hunt '98!

by Dan Small

The big news around here this fall is "Deer Hunt '98," our eighth annual live broadcast, which aired last week on Channel 10. Since this is Wisconsin's Sesquicentennial year, we followed that theme in the live program. We looked back on 150 years of deer hunting and wildlife and habitat management here in Wisconsin. We also looked at three deer-hunting situations that can lead to accidents: the use of tree stands, deer drives and low-light conditions. There was also an exciting feature on the status of timber wolves, a native deer predator that was extirpated but that has now reestablished itself in the state. And we looked ahead to the Deer 2000 project and challenges that await us down the road in all these areas and more.

As always, Department of Natural Resources experts were on hand to answer your questions and to provide a region-by-region forecast for this year's firearms deer season, which runs Nov. 21-29. Viewer questions have always been a highlight of the show, and thanks for calling in with items you wanted to know more about. In keeping with the Sesquicentennial theme, we were even wearing buckskins that night! If you'd like to catch up on all the hunting fun facts we covered in this annual show, surf on over to the DNR's site on the Web!

Later that week, I was at the all-new Wisconsin Winter Sports Show at the Wisconsin Center Arena and Auditorium in downtown Milwaukee, Nov. 5-8. Showgoers found exhibits on every facet of winter sports, from hunting and ice fishing to snowmobiling, snowshoeing, skiing, winter camping and more. The familiar fish pond was transformed into an ice fishing pond, complete with clear plexiglas "ice" with holes cut out for fishing. The ice fishing gear and tackle exhibit was actually the biggest of its kind ever assembled in one place.

In the Outdoor Wisconsin Pavilion, located in Juneau Hall, between the Arena and Auditorium, we had daily seminars on every aspect of winter sports. You could also strap on a pair of Sherpa snowshoes and hike around on the "snow" hill we built just for this event. Thousands met "Mr. Tuna," of the Screamin' Tuna Surf & Ski Shop and entered to win a free kite-skiing lesson.
