Habitat Destruction on the Gulf Coast: An Outdoor Wisconsin Report
The impact from the Deepwater Horizon oil disaster and 70 years of dredging the Mississippi River is examined. Experts talk about the damage to Louisiana's Gulf Coast; and, they explain how the Upper Midwest is affected. A detailed look is also taken at how management of the Mississippi River, its tributaries and distributaries have resulted in the destruction of nearly one-third of the Louisiana Gulf Coast’s, and three million acres of wetlands in one lifetime.
The program begins with a look at Wisconsin’s migratory waterfowl and other birds, their numbers and overall population health, and the risks they face this fall as they migrate to the Gulf Coast. It will then ex-plore the impact of the Deepwater Horizon oil disaster on coastal wetlands and wildlife, clean-up efforts and possible residual effects of oil in the marsh.
The program takes a broader view of issues facing the Gulf Coast region, specifically how management of the Mississippi River, its tributaries and its distributaries have resulted in the destruction of nearly one-third of the Louisiana Gulf Coast’s three million acres of wetlands in one human lifetime. A look is taken at ongoing efforts and future plans to restore damaged wetlands, barrier islands and bayous.
Finally, a look is taken at what the long-term impact of these recent and historic events might be on the fish and wildlife resources of the Gulf Coast and the birds that migrate there from the Upper Midwest. We will rely on interviews with experts to provide an overview of these issues and project possible solutions to the problems they have caused.
DU and NWF have forged a partnership to advocate for restoration of the processes that created Louisiana’s coastal wetlands.
