Little
Lessons on how to tie shoes and wash hands are part of children's
programming on MPTV which began in early November 1995.
The new educational
spots teach small children good health and safety habits along
with basic skills needed for school. The lessons run for one to
two minutes and air between the children's programs scheduled
on MPTV. The station has a total of more than nine hours of children's
programming each day, Monday through Friday.
Subjects include brushing teeth, making lunch, crossing the street
and other daily living skills important to young viewers. Each
spot shows children learning and practicing the featured topic.
"We
hope these messages will help children become better prepared
for school," said Darlyne Haertlein, Community Relations
Supervisor for Milwaukee Public Television, "these are things
they need to know to be ready to participate in the formal learning
process."
"Little
Lessons" are part of MPTV's Ready to Learn Service which
was begun at the station in 1994. The national effort to provide
worthwhile children's programs and related materials is designed
to enhance learning ability. The service focuses on programs such
as Sesame Street, Barney and Friends, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood,
Reading Rainbow, Arthur and others.
As part of
its Ready to Learn programming, MPTV also offers workshops, program-related
materials, and educational events for children.
