Thinking Inside the Box
DECEMBER MEANS -REALLY- GREAT PERFORMANCES ON MPTV!
by Ellis Bromberg, General Manager of MPTV
Front row seats to the best in performance featuring exceptional talents and arts institutions. That's one of the hallmarks of our programming all year long.
With the holiday season, though, Decembers are particularly notable for great performances on MPTV, and this year is no exception. You can find something for practically every musical taste this month!
If you like classic rock and roll, we've got everything from LOGGINS AND MESSINA: SITTIN' IN AGAIN to the much-anticipated CREAM REUNION CONCERT from London's Royal Albert Hall to the remarkable ROY ORBISON & FRIENDS: BLACK AND WHITE NIGHT concert.
Doo wop fans? You won't want to miss what may be the best doo wop show we've ever aired: DOO WOP CAVALCADE: THE DEFINITIVE ANTHOLOGY.
A very exciting television event, Barbra Streisand's first special, the Emmy Award-winning MY NAME IS BARBRA, will be rebroadcast for the first time in 40 years.
A great family musical film? We've got that, too: THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN.
If you're a fan of the Great White Way, you'll be pleased to see that we are offering a December encore of the excellent history and music mini-series BROADWAY: THE AMERICAN MUSICAL.
Our viewers never seem to get enough of Irish music, so we've scheduled the charming TOMMY FLEMING: VOICE OF HOPE.
Of course, if you fancy music by the big "sweet bands," there's always GUY LOMBARDO AND HIS ROYAL CANADIANS and THE LAWRENCE WELK SHOW. Our weekly CLASSIC GOSPEL series continues on Saturday nights, too.
We've got a special holiday treat for viewers of our new high-definition digital channel. On the evening of December 21, we will present three stunning musical programs back-to-back which will all be broadcast with 5.1 Surround Sound on MPTV-HD Channel 36-1 (Channel 510 on Time Warner Cable): THE NIGHTINGALE, CHRISTMAS WITH THE MORMON TABERNACLE CHOIR FEATURING AUDRA McDONALD AND PETER GRAVES, and ST. OLAF CHRISTMAS IN NORWAY. It's the first time in MPTV history that we will offer a full-night of programming in 5.1 Surround Sound! (If you do not yet have HD service, don't worry: the programs will also be simulcast in stereo on Channel 10.)
There are many other music specials planned to help you celebrate the season, including ANDRE RIEU: THE CHRISTMAS I LOVE; SING WE NOW OF CHRISTMAS: A FESTIVAL OF CAROLS; L.A. HOLIDAY CELEBRATION 2005; CHRISTMAS AT LUTHER COLLEGE; and CONCORDIA COLLEGE CHRISTMAS CONCERT: O HOLY NIGHT.
To wrap up 2005, we will be LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER for the NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC NEW YEAR'S EVE GALA CONCERT which features a program of Italian opera!
And finally, continuing a time-honored holiday tradition, GREAT PERFORMANCES returns to the stately splendor of Vienna's Musikverein for its 22nd annual New Year's Day celebration with the Vienna Philharmonic and host Walter Cronkite. But that's January, and I don't want to get TOO far ahead of things.
Specific times and dates for all these programs can be found in the TV Schedule section on mptv.org and in FINE TUNING, the monthly magazine for our members.
Enjoy the holidays, and best wishes from all of us at Milwaukee Public Television and the Channel 10/36 Friends - and from the Bromberg family!
