Reading Rainbow Contest Announced
December 10, 2007
Milwaukee Public Television has announced that it will sponsor the 14th annual Reading Rainbow "Young Writers and Illustrators Awards" competition for children in kindergarten through third grade in southeastern Wisconsin.
Entries must be received at MPTV by Monday, March 3. Applications and additional information are available from MPTV at MPTV.org. Contestants must submit original, illustrated stories that will be judged for creative expression, storytelling, and related qualities.
Twenty local winners will be announced in March, and an awards ceremony and reception will be held for them in May. The winning stories will be videotaped and aired as a special summer program on MPTV-10 and 36. Individual stories will be seen between children's programs on MPTV-10 and 36 for one year.
Official entry forms and contest rules also are available at participating public libraries, Artist and Display art supply store, and the Betty Brinn Children's Museum. Every participant receives a Certificate of Achievement, and winners receive gift certificates, books and other awards. Last year, MPTV received 826 contest entries from area children.
Kindergarten and first grade students must submit a 50 to 200-word story, and second and third grade children must write 100 to 350-word stories. All stories must include at least five illustrations. An official entry form must accompany all entries.
Reading Rainbow, now in its 25th season, is a critically acclaimed, Emmy Award-winning, half-hour series focusing on children and literature. The program airs locally on MPTV-10 Sundays at 9:30 a.m. Check TV listings for additional airtimes.
Funding and support for the Reading Rainbow Project is provided by The Assurant Health Foundation, the Law Firm of Hupy & Abraham, and the Harley Davidson Foundation. Additional funding for children's programming is provided by the Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation.
