National Winners Announced
June 24, 2008
Three Milwaukee area children are national first place winners in the 14th annual Reading Rainbow "Young Writers and Illustrators" Contest. Their books were chosen from more than 45,000 entries from across the country, including 1,155 submitted to Milwaukee Public Television, the local sponsor.
Filumena Muro, Milwaukee, won first place in the kindergarten division for a story titled "Family Zoo." Ethan Hansen, Franksville, earned first place in the first grade division for "Monster in My Pocket." Emily Ellenbecker, Cascade, took first place in the second grade division with "Adventures with Sam."
The winners will receive a laptop computer and a set of Reading Rainbow DVDs and books. Sets of the DVDs and books also will be given to the winner's school and public library. The winning stories will be posted on pbskids.org/readingrainbow in early August.
The competition is sponsored nationally by the acclaimed children's public television program, Reading Rainbow. It is designed to encourage children from kindergarten through third grade to write and illustrate their own stories. Reading Rainbow airs on MPTV-36 Monday through Friday at 1 p.m.
Funding for the Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest is provided by the Assurant Health Foundation, the Law Firm of Hupy & Abraham, and the Harley Davidson Foundation. Additional funding for our children's programming is provided in part by The Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation.
