Milwaukee, WI -- In this 1995 interview, I REMEMBER host Jim Peck talks with musician Louie Bashell, also known as the "Milwaukee's Polka King" and the "Great Silk Umbrella Man." Bashell passed away December 18, 2008, at age 94. The program airs Monday, January 5, 2009, at 6:30 p.m., on MPTV-10 & 10.1 HD.
Bashell began playing the accordion at age seven, specializing in Slovenian tunes at his father's Walker's Point tavern. His 1947 record, "The Silk Umbrella Polka" became his best-selling album. He conducted his own polka band for more than 70 years.
