JOHN McGIVERN's "EARLY STORIES" WINS

Milwaukee, WI (November 9, 2010) - Milwaukee Public Television (MPTV) congratulates John McGivern for winning a Midwest Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement for Individual Excellence on Camera: Programming-Performer for his The Early Stories of John McGivern which was produced and broadcast by MPTV. The award was presented at the Chicago/Midwest Chapter: National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Presentation Ceremony on November 6, 2010.
The Early Stories of John McGivern was filmed on location throughout Milwaukee. Writer and performer McGivern recalls his childhood days by sharing hilarious stories from his large, Irish-Catholic family upbringing on Bartlett Avenue. Family, friends, parochial school, and 1960s life are recalled with humor and compassion. The program aired on MPTV in December 2009 and September 2010. It is now available from (click) MPTV Friends.
McGivern is currently a contributor to MPTV's Arts Digest, which explores the broad spectrum of arts and culture in SE Wisconsin. Arts Digest is hosted by Third Coast Digest's Jon Anne Willow and Tom Strini. Episode 103 aired in October 2010, and the next episode on creative industries will air in March 2011, on MPTV 10.1 HD. McGivern's resume also includes authoring and starring in four one-man-shows for which he received critical acclaim around the country. His first show, Midwest Side Story, opened to rave reviews at the Baliwick Theater in Chicago. His other one-man-shows, Mid-Summer Night McGivern, John McGovern's Winter Tales, and The Early Stories of John McGivern, have all run on Milwaukee Public Television and PBS stations across the country. He appeared on Milwaukee's WTMJ-4 with his entertainment segment called The Daily Dish McGivern Style, and has appeared in specials on HBO and Comedy Central. He was seen sitting next to Sally Field on Politically Incorrect and knighted by Julie Andrews in the hit film The Princess Diaries. He is a frequent guest on the WKLH-FM 96.5 Dave and Carole morning radio show in Milwaukee.
