Milwaukee,WI--(December 6, 2010) Fifty years after the 1961 Freedom Ride, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE is taking us back and inviting 40 college students to take the ride with the original riders on the 50th anniversary.

2011 Student Freedom Ride: Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the 2011 Student Freedom Ride?
The 2011 Student Freedom Ride will offer the opportunity for 40 college students from around the country to join the original riders and retrace the route of the 1961 Freedom Rides. This journey will take students from Washington, DC to Jackson, Mississippi, and will provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience history, and begin a national conversation about the state of civic engagement today.

2. When is the 2011 Student Freedom Ride?
The 2011 Student Freedom Ride will take place from May 6-16, 2011.

3. What is the purpose of the 2011 Student Freedom Ride?
Students will have the opportunity to discuss with, and partake in the historic ride with original Freedom Riders. Their ride will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Riders' original journey and will activate a discussion of civic engagement issues from both today and the past in an effort to stimulate a new generation of civic activists.

4. Who will get to go?
AMERICAN EXPERIENCE will select 40 college students from across the country with a broad range of backgrounds- lending diverse voices to the journey. We are looking for students who want to share their experiences and who are eager to learn from their peers, from pioneers in the civil rights movement, and from today's civic leaders. Students should possess strong written communication skills and must demonstrate a commitment to civic engagement.

5. Are there any costs to attending?
Accepted students will participate at no cost to them. All transportation, hotel and food expenses will be covered by AMERICAN EXPERIENCE.

6. When is the application deadline for the 2011 Student Freedom Ride and where can I apply?
All applications must be received by January 17, 2011. The application can be accessed at: http://www.pbs.org/freedomriders
