New MPTV Program Explores Third Ward
March 6, 2012
A new Milwaukee Public Television series, AROUND THE CORNER WITH JOHN MCGIVERN, will preview an episode about the Third Ward Monday, March 19, at 7 p.m. at SPiN, 233 E. Chicago St. The event is free and open to the public.
The series looks at life in 13 southeastern Wisconsin communities, exploring what it is like to live, work and play in each area. The Third Ward episode premieres Thursday, March 29, on MPTV HD 10.1 at 7:30 p.m. and repeats Friday, March 30, on MPTV HD 36.1 at 8 p.m.
McGivern, one of Milwaukee's most popular comic actors, goes behind-the-scenes to find the unique aspects of each community. The 30-minute episodes feature area residents, businesses and favorite pastimes as well as some background information from historian John Gurda.
The Third Ward's creative atmosphere is the focus of McGivern's explorations in one of Milwaukee's most popular historic areas. He talks with an artist and art critic, an opera singer, and media producers. He also stops to shop at Lela, Retique, and Broadway Paper and then visits the Public Market and the Wicked Hop, along with other favorite spots in the area.
Both McGivern and John Gurda are planning to be on hand for questions and comments after the show. Seating at the preview will be on a first-come basis. Other communities featured in the series are Bay View, Riverwest, Cedarburg, Sheboygan, King Drive, Brady Street, Burlington, Racine, Greendale, Lincoln Village, Wauwatosa, and East Town.
John McGivern is the author of several one-man plays and public television productions including the Emmy Award-winning "Early Stories of John McGivern."
